How ironic, posting this on slashdot when I find it's one of the worst CPU users to leave open thanks to allowing its ads to run. I want to do the right thing but the slashdot ads are surprisingly heavy CPU users. I find myself hitting escape as soon as the news articles have loaded to prevent the ads from loading since it always winds my laptop CPU fan up.

ionice has no effect on disk writes, and writing is where the problem occurs.

An anonymous reader writes "Activision, after acquiring Vivendi, became the new copyright holder of the classic King's Quest series of adventure game. They have now issued a cease and desist order to a team which has worked for eight years on a fan-made project initially dubbed a sequel to the last official installment, King's Quest 8. This stands against the fact that Vivendi granted a non-commercial license to the team, subject to Vivendi's approval of the game after submission. After the acquisition, key team members had indicated on the game's forums (now stripped of their original content by order of Activision) that Activision had given the indication that it intended to keep its current fan-game licenses, but was not interested in issuing new ones."

Raindeer writes: "In an effort to promote its new Cloud based DNS service SKYE, Nominum one of the commercial DNS-software, providers slaundered all open source/freeware DNS packages. It said: "Given all the nasty things that have happened this year, freeware is a recipe for problems, and it's just going to get worse.(....) So, whether it's Eircom in Ireland or a Brazilian ISP that was attacked earlier this year, all of them were using some variant of freeware. Freeware is not akin to malware, but is opening up those customers to problems. " This has the DNS community fuming. Especially when you know Nominum was one of the companies affected by the DNS Cache poisoning problem of last year. Something PowerDNS, MaraDNS and DJBDNS all open source weren't vulnerable too."

Read the posts. He may have been saying that it "can't cope" and used the % of cpu argument, but he also found that it shortened the time taken to complete his workload. quote: Frame time reduced by 2 mins on my O/C'd 3.8Ghz i7 920 (-bigadv -smp 8) with the bfs scheduler.
I don't know how long the workload normally takes so it doesn't really say what percentage improvement that is, but it is exactly what you asked for. It's also interesting to note that this is on an 8 (logical) CPU machine.
