I am glad to see that you did not penalize the students too heavily. In my college days I used to get in trouble at least once a year for being involved in "Similar Code" incidents, reason being that I would never refuse to sit down with anybody who has a problem with an assignment and work through the problem. In doing this I would sometimes, when the fellow student just wasnt getting it, show them my code which I would never let them keep. They would then come up with a similar solution and bang we would both get in trouble again. I now lead a team of 6 developers and the one thing which I encourage more than anything else is for the more senior members of the team to spend time with the other not so senior members bringing them up to speed. I dont care that they are wasting a little time doing this because it is always increasing the overall competency of the team...
