I blame the hard drive manufacturers. Why do drives fail, because they are made cheap. I've had to return at least 6 bad drives from 2 yr old Dell PC's in the last six months. And why are these Quantum hard drives crashing, because a chip on the drive burns out causing the R/W head to hit the platter. Gee, doesn't sound like its something that the user could prevent. Dell is good enough to replace the HDD's free of charge as long as they are under warranty. But they give 20~30 Gig drives back.
HDD manufacturer's are losing money, they need to recoup it by extending the warranty. The university I work for will definitely spring for the extended warranty, because the computer cycle here is 3-4 years, and there is no way the Uni. will buy new HDDs in that time. That's how HDD makers will make money. Corportions will have to get the extended warranty.
