Correct, but usually it's not a selling point. Usually for a car you want to sell power, mileage, safety and reliability. And in a phone you want cpu, camera and battery. I'm not seeing Tim Cook, on stage with a hammer saying "and now for something completely different..." *smashes iphone screen with hammer*, "and now you can replace it as often as you want"

I would like to see how one would market a flagship device as repairable. While people know that devices will break, you don't really want to know that while pre-ordering your next smartphone. Is like buying a car, and a salesman gives you the contact for the local mechanic

Submission + - Genetically Modified Plants To Produce Natural Lighting (singularityhub.com)

kkleiner writes: A team has launched a crowdsourcing campaign to develop sustainable natural lighting by using a genetically modified version of the flowering plant Arabidopsis. Using the luciferase gene, the enzyme responsible for making fireflies glow, the researchers will design, print, and transform the genes into the target plant. The project, which was recently launched on Kickstarter, has already raised over $100k with over a month left to go.

Submission + - Robot Snake To The Rescue! (i-programmer.info)

mikejuk writes: In these days of drones and robot soldiers it is nice to be reminded that robots can do good. A recent video from Carnegie Mellon University Biorobotics Lab demonstrates how the snakelike robots developed by the lab can aid search and rescue operations in collapsed buildings. The video appear more or less at the same time as the current real disaster in Dhaka, Bangladesh where an 8-storey building collapsed on April 24th, the same day the video was posted on You Tube, trapping some three thousand people, of whom at least 362 are now know to have died.
In Bangladesh rescue teams, helped by members of the community, have so far worked with small tools and their bare hands to bring out survivors. After five day the next phase will be to use heavy equipment. Having a snake robot that could provide pictures from within the building would certainly aid both phases of the operation, leading to speedier and more effective rescue operations.
It raises the question of why this technology is still a research project and not deployed?
It could be deployed and developed at the same time.

Submission + - Greenpeace says Internet emits too much CO2. (latimes.com)

Pharmboy writes: In an article entitled "Cloud computing and Internet use suck energy, emit CO2, says Greenpeace", the argument is put forth that the Internet is equal to the 5th largest "country" in emitting green house gases. It doesn't mention how much CO2 is saved by telecommuting and higher corporate efficiency, however. So exactly how "green" or "polluting" is the internet, really?
