Sometimes that license is time based.

I think that's the issue. There is no clear expiration date on the product. They should write "working for 3 years after purchase" or "working until 12/2027" on the product. Then people know what to expect. Instead Ubisoft is selling a product and making it unusable at a random point it time.

Comment Open protocol, independent servers (Score 1) 76

I feel you. It seems some people here don't understand the challenge of distance and grandparents, so neither a table nor discord will do. Be aware that some dedicated hardware might get obsolete at some point, my dedicated ”Logitech Skype TV cam HD” camera (including WiFi and LAN) only lasted a year until the servers got switched off. And I got dedicated Android cameras which used Duo that got killed, those Chinese devices never really worked well. Therefore I recommend to get a device with a non proprietary protocol, and not requiring manufacturer's servers. Currently we use tablets on both sides to talk to the grandparents, kids can take it and walk into their own room to show something. If you are into IT, you could look into Raspberry Pis, could run browser in kiosk mode, then any web video conference software should do, check Jitsi or BigBlueButton.

Comment It's also about the software (Score 2, Informative) 81

I tried some non Raspberry Pi SBCs and was very disappointed by software support. The official images sometimes come from strange servers, a simple `apt upgrade` breaks everything, new distro releases are not available officially, but only from individuals who care. Its nice to have the fastest hardware, but you spend a lot of time maintaining the software. When the next version SBC is released (next year), you might not get any official software updates. Thatâ(TM)s why I am very happy with Raspberry Pi, with their continuous software support you can still use their old hardware. And yes, current hardware supply is a pain.

Comment How about correlation with marketing budget? (Score 1) 106

So there may not be a correlation between "Box Office Mojo numbers" and "critic and audience score", but how does the spent marketing budget play into this? I assume if you plaster a city with movie ads, more people will go and watch. So if you want high box office numbers, you can buy them with advertising.

Comment AI is different (Score 1) 236

We had a lot of technologies established supporting the human work and employment, agreed. But if those next-gen machines (AI+robots) are suddenly more intelligent, faster and stronger, on the the other side don't need sleep, don't get sick and don't earn a salary - what is left there for us to do except for writing poems?

Comment Humans and society before space program? (Score 1) 119

With a child mortality rate (under five years old) in India of 52 (compare UK: 5, US: 7) and a literacy rate of 90% (or 74%, depending on source; compare UK/US: 99%) I wonder if the money should not rather be spend on healthcare and education (and health education). Even though space travel and lunar landing seems more fun.

Comment Nice try (Score 1) 1154

"A TV station is aiming at blocking modern TV users. This because a majority of the TV users installed a remote control and are therefor 'stealing money' from TV station owners that use ads by changing the channel. They recommend using black&white TVs with turning knobs instead."
