My situation: Old iPhone 3S, I switched carriers months ago, so no active AT&T contract.

I used the AT&T Wireless Support Chat, Tech Support. Told them I wanted an unlock. Initially got told they couldn't do it, I quoted the press release article. After a couple minutes, the tech opened a ticket for unlocking and said I'll hear by April 16th, 2012. So we'll wait and see.

Short version: Chat works, but be ready with that copy and paste. Also reading asking for a supervisor is helping some folks.

Need Help Salvaging Data From an Old Xenix System 325

Milo_Mindbender writes "I've recently gotten ahold of an old Altos 586 Xenix system (a late '80s Microsoft flavor of Unix) that has one of the first multi-user BBS systems in the US on it, and I want to salvage the historical BBS posts off it. I'm wondering if anyone remembers what format Xenix used on the 10MB (yes MB) IDE hard drive and if it can still be read on a modern Linux system. This system is quite old, has no removable media or ethernet and just barely works. The only other way to get data off is a slow serial port. I've got a controller that should work with the disk, but don't want to tear this old machine apart without some hope that it will work. Anyone know?"

An anonymous reader writes "At a Tokyo railway station above a flat-panel display hawking DVDs and books sits a small camera hooked up to some image processing software. When trials begin in January the camera will scan travelers to see how many of them are taking note of the panel, in part of a technology test being run by NTT Communications. It doesn't seek to identify individuals, but it will attempt to figure out how many of the people standing in front of an advertisement are actually looking at it. A second camera, which wasn't fitted at the station but will be when tests begin next month, will take care of estimating how many people are in front of the ad, whether they are looking at it or not."

To Jeffrey Kaplan,

Is there any chance at all of having a Jabber (or something else open-source) instant messager interface for at least whispers, but perhaps guild/officer communication as well? Would make arranging raids and such while we're at work a lot easier where we can't run the WoW client but can run Pidgin or Trillian. :)

Intel is also taking steps in this direction with the announcement of the CSI. With these technologies in the future we can put special chips (GPU's, APU's, etc. etc.) directly on the motherboard in a special socket. Hardware.Info has published a clear introduction to AMD Torrenza and Intel CSI and sneak peaks into the future of processors."
