Comment Re:They are doomed (Score 2) 73

The US Space Force operates a base on Greenland and given the small population of Greenland it is quite likely a large proportion of the people living in Greenland are American citizens.

Less than 1% of Greenland's population is from the US. Greenland's population is 89% Inuit.

Much of the occupied land of Greenland is already controlled by the USA.

Thule is a couple square miles. There are 56,000 people in Greenland, and only 600 of them are at Thule.

They would've been in controlled airspace as soon as they climbed past 700 AGL. Class E is controlled (and starts again above class A at 60,000') though I don't know if they picked up their clearance on the ground or in the air. In any event it sounds like they deviated from an ATC clearance which is a pretty cut-and-dry violation.

Professional pilot here. Thatâ(TM)s not why there are multiple pilots on transport aircraft. Itâ(TM)s because the high-workload phases are too much for one person. The en route phase is the lowest workload and is absolutely manageable by one person.

Also, lthough I donâ(TM)t know about Cathay specifically, not all airlines outside the US have flight deck doors.
