Feed Pioneer's 3.5-inch AVIC-S2 GPS gets official (engadget.com)

We knew it couldn't remain in hiding for too awfully long, as Pioneer's ho hum successor to the AVIC-S1 has stopped snooping around and gone official. The easy-to-remember (and easier to forget) AVIC-S2 touts a sexy black frame, blue backlit accents, and just about every other expected feature on a 3.5-inch handheld GPS. Running about par for the course, this rendition touts a touchscreen display, TeleAtlas maps, 1.7 million POIs on a 1GB SD card, integrated Bluetooth / handsfree calling, and the obligatory MP3 player to boot. Apparently, Pioneer isn't trying to win the hearts of onlookers with an attractive price, as this perfectly average navigation device will reportedly run you a stiff $399 when it lands later this month.

Submission + - IT's Big Spenders in R&D

TechEGrl writes: R&D spending increased by 17 percent in 2006, according to a new report on CIO Insight that ranks the top 81 R&D spenders. The spending was mostly targeted at consumer rather than business products, though Microsoft — not surprisingly the biggest spender with an investment of $6.58 billion — did throw significant change at biz apps like the Vista operating system. Investment in Internet search was dominated by Google, which more than doubled its R&D spending in 2006 and far outpaced competitors like Yahoo and eBay.

Google Desktop for Mac Released 186

Julio Ojeda-Zapata writes "Google on Tuesday will release a Mac version of Google Desktop. This software, like the PC version, indexes the content of a hard drive and serves it up on familiar Google-style search-result Web pages (or via a its own drop-down results list, if you prefer). But Google Desktop for the Mac is streamlined compared to the busy, gadget-y Windows version, which isn't necessarily a bad thing. The focus is squarely on search — including local indexing of an online Gmail account of your choice. It will also index your iDisk."
