Comment The case in December... (Score 2) 502

The court decision can be found here: https://www.franz.de/fileadmin/user_upload/urteil_ag_mitte_anonymisiert.pdf

The decision back then argued that LH can actually put in their Conditions of Carriage that if a leg of the flight is not taken, LH has the right to charge a price difference.
The reasons why it did not accept the argument:
* there is no transparency as to how the price difference is calculated. The passenger cannot check anywhere online what the equivalent price would be without the last leg, thus the clause cannot be made effective
* there is not a maximum amount specified nowhere, so that the passenger has no clue what would be the maximum consequence of not taking the last leg
* LH arguments that the tariff difference should apply to the whole round trip, that is the new calculation should be for the route Oslo-Frankfurt-Seattle-Frankfurt-Berlin (instead of Oslo as the last leg as originally booked, the passenger took a separate flight from Frankfurt to Berlin, which was paid separately). The court rejected this argumentation, saying the applicable route would be Oslo-Frankfurt-Seattle-Frankfurt. The fact that the passenger took another flight to Berlin should not play a factor here, as the airline only found out about it because it was booked with the same airline.

In summary, do not book the alternative route with the same airline :)

Sounds strange though that the court would admit the argument that you have to pay more for using less, as a way for the carrier to be able to protect their pricing structure.

Comment Re:Owncloud option that is _NOT_ written in PHP? (Score 1) 30

I've been using seafile for some months now and it works quite well. OwnCloud (v5 or so when I tried it) was slow and full of bugs, it would just find random sync errors and start placing copies of files everywhere. An initial sync of a 5-7 GB directory would take hours. Seafile takes one fraction of the time.
They also have frequent updates, so the missing features have also been implemented or will be implemented in the near future.

Mono 2.0 and .NET On Linux 405

Several readers noted the release of Mono 2.0, which is compatible with Microsoft's .NET Framework 2.0. According to Miguel de Icaza, "... users can move over server applications built for .NET and client applications built with Windows Forms." InternetNews points out that only about half of the .NET apps out there will work on Mono 2.0, for a variety of reasons including (but not limited to) legacy Windows-only libraries and Microsoft's progress on .NET 3.0 and 3.5 APIs.

Nobel Prize For Medicine Awarded, Physics Soon To Follow 135

Nobel Prize season is here again, and the first award for Physiology or Medicine was split between two virologists who discovered HIV and one who demonstrated that a virus causes cervical cancer. Coming soon is the announcement for Physics. Look to the right for a chance to pit your selection wit against the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences with a poll for which scientific achievement deserves the prize. Front runners, according to Reuters, are; Andre Geim and Kostya Novoselov, discovers of graphene, Vera Rubin, provider of the best evidence yet of dark matter, and Roger Penrose and Dan Shechtman, discoverers of Penrose tilings and quasicrystals.

Sanyo Invents 12X High-Speed Blu-ray Laser 194

Lucas123 writes "Today Sanyo said it has created a new blue laser diode with the ability to transfer data up to 12 times as fast as previous technologies. The laser, which emits a 450 milliwatt beam — about double that of previous Blu-ray Disc systems — can read and write data on discs with up to four data layers, affording Blu-ray players the ability to store 100GB on a disc, or 8 hours of high-definition video."

Microsoft Adding jQuery To Visual Studio 67

Tim Anderson writes "Microsoft's Scott Guthrie, Corporate VP of the .NET developer division, announced that the open source jQuery Javascript library will be integrated into Visual Studio, the main Windows development tool. Further, Microsoft will treat jQuery as a supported product within technical support contracts, and will use jQuery to build new controls for ASP.NET, its web platform."

Virtual Fence Could Modernize the Old West 216

Hugh Pickens writes "For more than a century, ranchers in the West have kept cattle in place with fences of barbed wire, split wood and, more recently, electrified wires. Now, animal science researchers with the Department of Agriculture are working on a system that will allow cowboys to herd their cattle remotely via radio by singing commands and whispering into their ears and tracking movements by satellite and computer. A video of Dean Anderson, a researcher at the USDA's Jornada Experimental Range at Las Cruces, NM., shows how he has built radios that attach to an animal's head that allow a person at the other end to issue a range of commands — gentle singing, sharp commands, or a buzz like a bee or snake — to get the cattle to move where one wants them to. Anderson says it would cost $900 today to put a radio device on one head of cattle, but he says costs will fall and the entire herd wouldn't have to be outfitted, just the 'leaders.' Much of the research has focused on how cattlemen can identify which cattle in their herds are the ones that the others follow."
