Google Caffeine Drops MapReduce, Adds "Colossus" 65

An anonymous reader writes "With its new Caffeine search indexing system, Google has moved away from its MapReduce distributed number crunching platform in favor of a setup that mirrors database programming. The index is stored in Google's BigTable distributed database, and Caffeine allows for incremental changes to the database itself. The system also uses an update to the Google File System codenamed 'Colossus.'"

There are think tanks which hire researchers/computer scientists to work on various projects which might be right up your alley. The one I work at is called Southwest Research Institute, but there are others. I work primarily in space research and have a BS in Computer Science from a local university. Some of my work has even shown up on Slashdot! I freely admit I know very little about space compared to the astronomers and physicists I work with; however, I use my computational/development skills to make it easier for scientists to do science. We have other divisions as well besides space, but none of them really fit exactly what you mentioned you were interested. Nevertheless, you may want to check them out...

It's well known that the word was used in MIT hacker jargon around that time, but how did it get there? Candidates are the term 'zorch' from late 1950s DIY electronics slang, the use of the term as a placeholder in some early 1970s textbooks, the typo a QWERTY user would get if he typed 'work' on an AZERTY keyboard, and several uses in obscure sci-fi. No solid answers so far, though, as there are problems with many of the possible explanations that would have made MIT hackers unlikely to have run across them at the right time."
