Comment Re:That's the whole point of renewables subsidies. (Score 1) 297

All energy is subsidized to reduce poverty and improve our standard of living. Without it, heating, cooling, clean water, food, medical care, electricity, etc would be un-affordable for many people. We would also have starvation, frequent disease outbreaks, increased crime and so on. Don't throw out all your eggs but the ones that come from clean energy. Just ask Georgetown Texas how that turns out. https://wattsupwiththat.com/20... https://www.forbes.com/sites/c...

Comment Where Does The Money Go? (Score 1) 296

Just like the tobacco lawsuits, the money will end up in the hands of companies who donate it back to the politicians who granted them a big fat government contract. This doesn't help the public one bit. The problem will still exist and the money will just get pilfered. The public should demand accountability of that money with a settlement like this.

There are no standards or regulations for job titles. I've been a programmer, senior programmer, project lead, tech lead, software architect, software engineer and IT Manager. All but one of those was writing code. Title isn't necessarily an indication or skill or job responsibilities but varies based on an employers terminology. I often expect that someone with the term "programmer" on their resume was assigned to just write code. Leads should have been in charge of a development for a project or team. By the time you can claim the term engineer, I would expect you've been a programmer for at least 10 years, been a lead for another 10 and have such a versatile background that you can design and implement large integrated systems. That would include overall design, system integration, platform and network internals, etc. The term engineering implies the ability to design and build, given extensive knowledge in a field of study.

Comment Christmas Lighting (Score 1) 328

I use several RPi's for my x-mas light show. One is a master that sends show data to the other two (WiFi) and several Beaglebone black's. The BBB is a much better choice for lighting than the RPi because it has 2 separate real time modules that can drive lights independent of the CPU. Driving lights directly from Linux can be problematic because Linux has too much unnecessary overhead to be a decent real time solution. It works but doesn't keep up 100%.

Comment Stay At Home (Score 1) 126

Staying at home is not good for your mental health either. Just ask any stay at home mom. If working one day a week is better for your mental state then what do you do the rest of the time to make sure you're not impeding the benefit? Perhaps if people were doing something beneficial for their mental health on their off time, they could tolerate a longer period of work.
