It is indeed a non-trivial task to leverage the "appeal" of "free" without taking on the "risk" of "no cashflow". Perhaps this whole Open Source phenomenon is experiencing the very reality that Communism faced. That is, "from each his ability, to each his need", really is a violation of human nature. As I ponder setting a corporate strategic direction for Linux and, initially, web applications and services, I wonder at how "right" this seems with my 20 years of experience, and how much control unqualified folks here at my job have over a decision that should be mine.
