A) I can't say I'm seeing this as completely black|white. I can say, however, I feel some of the same shock you seem to at the audacity of it all and at the "players" in this situation.
B)let me just get this opinion/belief out of the way: Hypocrisy is an innate human (esp. looking at a mass of us together;) characteristic. Denying the tendancy towards it is folly in this case. As is denying inheritant greed.. even suggesting that the corporate/industrial world recognizes the individual as anything more than a tool or a number, a profit margin, is quite silly, too. Yet it's we who have let them get away with that. It's the "once, your fault; twice, my fault" thing, no? They aren't going to change.. at least not until well after we.. "the people" do... slapping their wrists or endorsing suing their butts may well keep some in check, and more in the long run.. but it's not teaching anyone to make responsible, decent, "right" choices.. it's teaching the thief to balance his thievery.. to be wary of getting caught.. not that thievery is wrong.
Companies making profit at the expense of idiots or even the simply uneducated/ignorant is, i agree, a not-nice thing. But who do we blame? We've all heard, "don't believe everything you read/hear" or mentioned the adage "trust no one"? See my point?
It's like we are saying, "I'm right here - just one big piece of putty with big ol' gobs o'glorious money in my hands.. mold me to your liking, o' gods of propaganda". Then we add, "i'm going to put my brain on hold from now on though.. so here's my money.. be my brain, too"..
???? if they fail.. or cause us harm .. well, then we blame *them*. Afterall.. we sold our rights to our own brains, to our own judgement, Remember that? We bought your product! OH...... So.. come on.. we all landed here here butt naked and cold.. we *really* expect someone else to handle any of the rest of it? See my point. Get rid of the illusionary veil of civilized security, and we become a stronger community.. strip ourselves of the hype/ethnocentric/cultural/societal bullshit we're all so submersed in and.. it becomes eminently clear who is doing the real abusing here. It's not a one fault situation, in my opinion, - pretending it is a one sided fault will only take us further into the problem rather than to a more responsible, stable society.. And for me, ignorance is no excuse in this situation. if one can't play with the proverbial big dogs, there's a porch labeled darwinism somewhere waiting for them.. that's my opinion. i feel no pain for the idiot... nor his/her parents who left them out in the world stupid as they are in plain view for all the world to see.
All that said, pretend it's just you and i. there are no big brothers, no lawmakers, no lawyers, no mcdonalds drive throughs. me and you. tasting berries or something.. we're hungry. now you *know* how to do this.. you've done it all your life. taste a bit of one new berry. wait. dead yet? no? try again tomorrow. still not dead? proceed but with caution until you realize you can eat a quantity of these things and not die.. suddenly.. you've got food. Now.. the next week, there we are picking berries. You are hungry. You gorge yourself on this new berry.. oops. dead. Who do I sue? I've lost my fellow berry picker because.. why? Because that dam'ed berry god, that's why!? Nah. Survival. I realize our society no longer embraces survival of the fittest.. but maybe it should.
(now i do realize we aren't all out pickin berries. we've got 9-5's and such and dammit, we don't want to have to test the dammed berries.. can't we buy pre-tested berries?! see that's *our* mistake.. should we blame those who enable us to pretend it's not our responsibility to test 'em any longer.. or ourselves for not doing it?)
also, let's not forget that industry is the child of government .. and while government tends to punish it's own, industry is *still* the GOVERNMENT'S CHILD.
and now i conclude for you, finally, with some more annoying, perhaps tres cliche quotes..
"a building is only as stable as it's foundation.. i don't rest on this one... " - a dead ancestor prior to leaving parliament
"everyone is talking about who's to blame when all that counts is how to change" - james (the band)
