Journal bettiwettiwoo's Journal: There's Nothing Worse Than Being Un-Australian 13

Sam Kekovich informs you what to eat on Australia Day (26 January) ... if you're a proper Aussie, that is. And there is, after all, nothing worse than being un-Australian!

After urgently reviewing the commercial yesterday, the [Australian Advertising Standards Bureau] said it had received more compliments than complaints, and decided the ad did not breach standards.

  • It's a very funny commercial. I'm glad to see that the wowsers didn't mange to take it off the air as it was quite obviously comedy.
    • I think it's hilarious.

I also think that it's perfectly tiresome that some people seem to be completely devoid of a sense of humour. Jesus, people, eat your greens and lighten up!
      • agreed, if they can't understand humour, then they should stay at home and not bother people.
        • It's actually one of my pet peeves at the moment: people complaining about being offended and demanding that the offending act be stopped by law and proper authorities.

When did the right to express yourself become conditional on not offending somebody/anybody?!? Previously, we considered the de-criminalization of blasphemy and lèse-majesté as progress; now we are all of a sudden regressing -- while prending to progress -- into accepting a sort of lèse-chatouilleux. Although surely, if you th
          • Atkinson makes some good points, thanks for that. I think satire and comedy in general is a very important form of social critique.

Religions and political ideologies have the nature (by whatever particular creed) to move towards fundamentalism and absolutism, so I think it's very important that people are appraised in this way whether they like it or not. I also think that people who are intolerant and absolutist should be offended quite often. It's a good way of drawing out their views and getting a debat
            • ... there's a line between libetarianism and sheer bad taste designed merely for shock.

But even if there is such a line, would you support prohibition of the latter? I wouldn't. I mean, given the choice between watching Jerry Springer and having my nails pulled out, I would actually have to pause and think for a bit, but so what? I don't have ot watch it. The people appearing on Jerry Springer don't have to be there. His studio audience is not forced to behave like retarded apes.

              I admit that there are
              • I tend to think that say for instance dehumanising pornography that abuses women should infact be fiercely prohibited. I also think that Jerry Springer's show is a form of extended racism (or perhaps socio-economic-ism). In any case, the results are the same, and they shouldn't be allowed.

Personally, I'm not terribly worried that someone is not allowed to feed their hatred of women through dehumanising pornography. I consider such people as mentally ill, and I don't think that society should allow it whats
                • I disagree with almost all of your points.

Mentally retarded people are usually not considered as able to give 'consent', that's why they have guardians or are wards of the court or something. In other words, I don't see how pornography depicting mentally retarded people in any capacity can be legal. My point about children is that since they cannot be expected to make informed choices, it is desireable to protect them legally (paedophilia and statutory rape). The same obviously applies to retarded people.
                  • If you think that the fine line is being able to give consent, then you draw the line somewhere. I think that if you're prepared to draw the line, then draw it to protect everyone, not just those with diminshed consent. One could argue for instance that a pornography film that simulates sex with corpses harms nobody - but even if it was simulated, it would be utterly repulsive. I myself don't want to live in a society where there is no restraint and where liberty means the right to be depraved.

                    I don't thi
                    • You might consider men who enjoy degrading porn as misogynists -- and they are. But so, in a way, are you. You presume that women don't know how to protect themselves or how to make choices or that they can understand or tolerate the consquences of their actions/choices. I assume it's inadvertent, but you're actually quite condescending and your reasoning equates women in general with children or mentally retarded people. I resent that.

I don't understand you reasoning about social engineering. Social engin
                    • Hi Bettiwettiwoo, but I don't use wikipedia as a reliable source, so I'm don't think discussing such a bad source is worthwhile. My academic background just won't let me. I'd suggest that a dictionary is a more reliable source of definitions - but even this is not certain.

I have no intention whatsoever to suggest that women are inferior, nor do I believe it to be so, but women are certainly raped and murdered as well as exploited in society much more than men are, in the same way as disabled and children a
  • You gotta love Keka. I didn't realise it was a commercial the first time I saw it. I was flicking channels and thought I had found a comedy show.

It's one of the best ads I've seen in a long time. It's good to see that the AASB uses some sense when assessing complaints.
    • I didn't realise it was a commercial the first time I saw it.

I know what you mean. It's not very 'commerical-y', is it?! No product placement, just that little quick we love our lamb at the end; no happy-pappy people and no soothing voice-over, just Kekovich's mad stare and his insane speed-talk.

Me favourite bit is when he rhetorically asks whether the diggers fought for tofu sausages. Until then I hadn't actually realized that tofu sausages are funny. You see, you learn! Closely followed, of course, whe
