Journal bethanie's Journal: New Hardware is So Friggin Sexy! 20

When last we left off, Bethanie had filled up her hard drive with ripped CDs and had discovered, much to her dismay, that the photos she *thought* she had backed up on DVD-RW weren't. In short, it was a crisis.

Well, Hubby remedied the situation by ordering a new 200 GB external hard drive which arrived this morning (this time I *did* meet the FedEx man in the driveway, thanks to my ultra-lo-tech doorbell. I was even fully dressed!).

I buzzed Hubby on his cell and got his blessing to see if I could get it to work on my computer. So I plugged it in and lo and behold, it just worked! And it's not even an Apple!!

So now, after several hours of thrashing drives exchanging bits and bytes, I have switched iTunes over to accessing the library on the external HD. The music files are deleted from my laptop, and I once again have a nice, comfortable 25.8 GB of free space.

And I'm back to rippin' like a mofo. It's pretty neat that I stick these discs into my laptop, but all the ripping goes straight onto the external HD. I can't believe it worked so easily! This phase of the project should be done in maybe another coupla days, and that'll be cool.

In the meantime, I've discovered that podcasts take about 5 times as long to download as it takes to listen to them. Not exactly designed with dialup users in mind, eh? Anyone got any bright ideas about how I might be able to download them over some faster connection somewhere (maybe the public library?) and get them onto my iPod? Anyone? Anyone?

  • ...what kind of dog is that? She looks kinda like mine [alfter.us], but with less gray/white hair (though the picture kinda exaggerates it...here's another [alfter.us]). I've always said mine's a mutt when people have asked, but maybe she isn't...or at least I might be a bit closer to figuring out just what kind of mix she really is.

(Now watch this JE turn into a dogblogging session. :-) )

    • Dawg's a mix (a rescued neighborhood stray). Aussie shephard, mostly, but I'm also certain that she's got some labrador retriever in her, too. Her coat has the same exact feel as my parents' Lab, and her face has a lot more Lab in it than Aussie.

We have the benefit of having an Aussie and a Lab in the neighborhood, so I've been able to do a detailed comparison of them, and that's what I've come up with.

I'd say that Molly definitely looks to have some Aussie in her -- but she looks smaller than Dawg (who

The groomer has Molly on her books as an Australian shepherd (since they don't have a billing entry for "mutt," I guess). Maybe I should've taken that as a clue. :-) That, and chocolate Lab, sounds like it could be about right...she has the brown coat and brown nose of a chocolate Lab.

      • Can we just call her Ding-A-Ling? I mean, like, for real?

Oh, and she weighs more like 50 pounds than 60.

OT: How long does this stupid timer-between-posts thingie last?
        • Excuse me? Who takes the dog to the vet? She weighs between 50 and 60 pounds. I round up because that's her upper limit. Don't give me shit. I'll work your ass OVAH.

And the timer is because you are assumed to be a troll. EVERYONE is assumed to be a troll. And preventing posts from being any closer together than 2 minutes somehow reduces the amount of trolling done on Slashdot.

          Or something.

What is this 'dialup' you speak of? Some form of archaic net access or something?

In theory you should be able to download them to your laptop anywhere that offers a
    • Hey -- that's a great idea!! I can go down to the Atlanta Bread Company in town and give the kids & me a yummy lunch while we download all my podcasts! Cool!!! I just need to talk to Hubby about firewall stuff -- oh, and I'll need to tote along the external HD, too.

Whatever. Desperate times call for desperate measures. :-)

  • Nice doorbell--looks like a sweetie!

Hrm. I think the best solution would be to go to starbucks with your external harddrive and sync the ipod using a "modern" internet connection. :)

C'mon Bethanie, tell that hubby of yours to DIG A DAMN TRENCH to the nearest Central Office and lay some fiber optic cable to get some real internet access already. No more livin in the 50's internet-wise. I don't think people design stuff with dialup users in mind anymore.

    • ironically broad band is highly available in even the most rural communities around here.. (here being wisconsin) apparently some genius at the local cable company got a bunch of VC money and actually spent it building a cable internet infrastructure, while also buying out numerous 'small town' cable companies that were being put out of buisness by dish.. (when you've got a 20 channel analog cable system from the 1930s and there is this brand new shiny 'dish' with 500 channels well.. people forget who the l
    • Oh, Rob, you don't *know* the lengths Hubby has gone to to try to get high speed internet access here.

See, we're something like *two* miles too far off the main highway to get DSL here. Our neighbors less than .5 miles away can get it.

And we *could* get satellite access, too, but Hubby is dead set against it because of their bandwidth limits.

He spent HUNDREDS of hours (and dollars, I might add!) trying to get a WISP set up. Rented radio equipment, had signs printed up, went door to door drumming up in

      • Has he looked into satellite lately? The company I work for has FAP (Fair Access Policy) limits, but for someone who doesn't do a lot of filesharing, they're reasonable.

Heck, I've not gotten near any of the limits, and it's my only ISP.
      • He spent HUNDREDS of hours (and dollars, I might add!) trying to get a WISP set up. Rented radio equipment, had signs printed up, went door to door drumming up interest, spent *hours* every day poring over satellite maps & simulations & whatnot... But it turned out that the technology just wasn't strong enough to reach enough people with enough signal to make it viable.

Providing wi-fi access has a lot of variables involved. Most of the sucessful WISP's I know of have typically had either a hardcore

Providing wi-fi access has a lot of variables involved. Most of the sucessful WISP's I know of have typically had either a hardcore HAM or professional microwave engineer working for them. So there is apparently some voodoo involved. From what I understand, the biggest thing for getting any range other than using the proper antennas is clea

Well I know next to nothing about RF so I'm sure I'm even more clueless than before you started looking into doing a WISP co-op.

I found through experimentation that I would need to get up higher to go through only the tops of trees to have a prayer of reaching the 25-30 paying customers it would take to break even, but a 100+ foot tower was not

    • Do you know who he's getting it through? Maybe his local NRTC member? I happen to work for a company who does satellite internet.

It's more expensive than dial-up ($50-$100, depending on speed), and yes, you have 500ms built-in latency, but it works. At speeds up to 1.5 mbs.

drop me an email at my gmailbox. :D
      • Thanks, darlin'. I emailed him with a link to this thread, so he can contact you if he's interested. I'm really not familiar with the various pertinent details -- it's really his deal.

        ....Bethanie....
    • I couldn't live in the country for this very reason. I need (read NEEEEEEED) my fast, always on internet access. I know you guys are ok with dialup, but it's just my geekiness overwhelming me. One of the guys at work lives in the middle of the corn fields and he's finally getting satellite access. Expensive though...

Past a certain point getting a T-1 makes sense. They really aren't that expensive anymore, especially via someone like Speakeasy (both for the loop from the telco and for the internet portion).
      • Yes, telecommuting would go a long way to justifying the cost of a T-1 line. But Hubby doesn't really have a telecommuting job. He might be able to do it one or two days a week, but it seems like he really benefits from being in the office with his coworkers.

As it stands right now, our usage really doesn't justify that kind of expense.

        ....Bethanie....
        • The guy doing this came in one or two days a week and had the company picking up part of the tab.

It was a special deal for a longtime employee the company really wanted to retain after he fully vested.
