Which of your concerns about losing access to checks don't apply to processing checks? Every check is tracked. Any check processing can be stopped. And in the event of a banking shutdown, who is going to accept one knowing they can't deposit it? The cost of processing a check is astronomical. People are profiting from the process.

A legal agreement needs An Offer, Acceptance, Consideration, Capacity, and Legality of Purpose. A signature is a form of written acceptance - which is harder to dispute, but verbal agreement or conduct (accepting and using a good or service) is just as binding. A handshake is also just as binding as a signature.

Except its the other way around (at least in most countries) they have to prove that it was you.

I find it extraordinary that Americans still regularly use cheques. And still get paid that way too. Someone should do the math on how much productivity is lost through producing and processing of cheques. Producing, Depositing, Processing, Verifying - easily over an hour per cheque, so over $5b per year before you add in fees and any time wasted travelling to somewhere to deposit it. A quick google shows that $66m in fees was spent to cash the stimulus cheques. Mind-blowing stuff.
