The Big Technical Mistakes of History 244

An anonymous reader tips a PC Authority review of some of the biggest technical goofs of all time. "As any computer programmer will tell you, some of the most confusing and complex issues can stem from the simplest of errors. This article looking back at history's big technical mistakes includes some interesting trivia, such as NASA's failure to convert measurements to metric, resulting in the Mars Climate Orbiter being torn apart by the Martian atmosphere. Then there is the infamous Intel Pentium floating point fiasco, which cost the company $450m in direct costs, a battering on the world's stock exchanges, and a huge black mark on its reputation. Also on the list is Iridium, the global satellite phone network that promised to make phones work anywhere on the planet, but required 77 satellites to be launched into space."

8-Year Fan-Made Game Project Shut Down By Activision 265

An anonymous reader writes "Activision, after acquiring Vivendi, became the new copyright holder of the classic King's Quest series of adventure game. They have now issued a cease and desist order to a team which has worked for eight years on a fan-made project initially dubbed a sequel to the last official installment, King's Quest 8. This stands against the fact that Vivendi granted a non-commercial license to the team, subject to Vivendi's approval of the game after submission. After the acquisition, key team members had indicated on the game's forums (now stripped of their original content by order of Activision) that Activision had given the indication that it intended to keep its current fan-game licenses, but was not interested in issuing new ones."

I just picture foam falling off inside the tank and clogging up the engine in mid flight. I can just see the shuttle taking off and 30 seconds into flight the primary booster sputtering and shutting down. Of course the foam would probably disintegrate when it came into contact with the fuel, but the mixture of foam and fuel could add that extra chemical boost to get a few extra horse power out of the engines. Did I mention that I am not a rocket scientist? I know its hard to believe... these things just pop in my head.

I always wondered why they didn't skin or wrap something over the foam. I would think a thin wrap of Mylar or some other lightweight yet strong film could be used, of course I am not a rocket scientist. Heck, just wrap the sucker in Saran wrap or duct tape. Even better, just have Trojan make a booster sized condom.

UK, Not North Korea, Is Source of DDoS Attacks 175

angry tapir writes "The UK was the likely source of a series of attacks last week that took down popular Web sites in the US and South Korea, according to an analysis performed by a Vietnamese computer security researcher. The results contradict assertions made by some in the US and South Korean governments that North Korea was behind the attack. Security analysts had been skeptical of the claims, which were reportedly made in off-the-record briefings and for which proof was never delivered." The Vietnamese security site's blog is linked from the article, but it is very slow even before Slashdotting. The researchers observed 166,908 zombies participating in the attacks — a number far larger than most earlier estimates.
Update: 07/14 21:24 GMT by KD : Wired is reporting that the UK owner of the IP address in question is pointing a finger at a server in Florida, which it says opened a VPN to the UK machine for the attacks. Once again, the attacker could be anywhere.

Comment Airspan WiMAX (Score 2, Insightful) 36

Airspan makes a WiMAX unit that operates in the 700mhz band (google airspan 700mhz). I have not used it, but it is available. I think the bigger problem is actually getting the license, unless you can lease it from an existing license holder. From what I understand, the license is very expensive and has a lot of strings attached (ie coverage requirements).

Does anyone here have any first hand knowledge of the 700mhz license?

Comment Re:Virtual Game Machine? (Score 1) 277

How about putting a dedicated gaming console OS at the BIOS level, kinda like the Splashtop software. You could boot into standard PC mode or console gaming mode. One downside (there would probably be many) would be that user X's quad graphics card rig would perform the same as user Y's mid-range card. Heck, take it one step further and emulate Xbox and/or Playstation consoles there.
