Never assume that remote workers, no matter what level, will respond. I was an IBMer for 10 years. Reported to a Director with many years tenure.
Could rarely/never contact her.
Never answered office phone.

Email...too full to accept any more emails.
Text messages: nope...too full.
Visited physical office...rarely there.

Comment Lotus vs MS-Office (Score 1) 91

IBM acquired Lotus about 1994.
IBM acquired my employer, Candle, in 2004.
We were assigned to the Tivoli division.
Our new computer setup was deployed with the ...MS-Office family .
You could still install the Lotus suite.
I found this intriguing, since the company had over 400,000 employees, and the Office product was certainly not free for IBM.

It is generally acknowledged that China has not played by all the rules. For example, they apparently demand technology exchange if you want to do business in China. And, yes, they have constructed islands/military bases in shipping lanes generally acknowledged as open lanes, not owned by China. And hacking? Yes, that too.
This has been an issue over several administrations...certainly occurring during Clinton, Bush #2, Obama, and Trump.

We may have to ignore hacking and currency manipulation practiced by some other nation-states and non-state actors.
So, do we FINALLY have the US government stepping up to the plate. I note that this is NOT the Prez doing this, it is the Senate.
Has the Senate actually stepped up to the challenge?
Really? Wow. Finally!

The Postal Service files a 10K (annual financial statement) with the SEC.
The document is publicly available.
It shows that the Postal Service DOES lose money each year.
Why?
Part of the reason is that the USPS is burdened with fully funding their retirement pension and health programs. Most organizations that still offer fixed benefits programs to retirees fund them on a pay as you go plan. But the USPS must pre-fund for 75 years of liability, and have the money set aside within a 10 year period. Ouch!
This ruling may be reversed, but for now...it is a big nugget to deal with.

Hmmm...when a Bezos newspaper publishes a certain point of view, we know it is coming from a Bezos newspaper. But, when an unknown donor promotes the publishing of a certain point of view, ... we do not know who that donor is. Is it the Koch brothers? KKK? new-Nazis?

Also, when Bezos newspaper publishes a point of view, it is not trying to influence the local office holder. But, when an unnamed donor promotes a certain point of view, ONLY the current office holder knows who is financing that POV. And the office holder knows that if they do NOT toe the line, they will (a) never receive another penny for their campaign, (b) their opponent WILL receive the next donation, and (c) they will never get a job with the donor after their term expires.
