Journal banky's Journal: The next best thing? 8
Good lord.
"We need new blogware" "we need a new site" blah blah blah
perhaps you've heard of the Internet, and hyptertext.
The tools exist already. The infrastructure is there. Pick the software you want, and set it up. It's not hard. Don't want to admin a server? Beg someone to give you space on theirs (I offer it all the time, and no one goes for it), or an LJ invite.
Use hyptertext (you know, LINKS), RSS, FOAF, all that shite that ALREADY EXISTS AND IS KNOWN TO WORK. If you can make an HTML page, you can do it. It's no harder than posting to slashdot and given the resources of the FK circle, 0 cost for nearly everyone.
If you want to reinvent the wheel (ie, write a new blogware/siteware/etc) the do so; I support your efforts. But the point is, there's no need unless (like Xer, apparently) you want to do that. If you just want a Web-based social network, IT ALREADY EXISTS PEOPLE. IT'S CALLED THE WEB.
Allow me to explain how this works.
1. I have a site, called 'neurobashing.com'. I use the popular MovableType CMS, aka blogging software.
2. LadyGuardian has a site, ladyguardian.com. She uses... well I think she hand-edits that stuff in notepad.exe, cause she's way more hardcore that I.
3. Let's pretend for a minute that she likes what I write (she friended me so it's a fair assumption, I think).
4. She can 1)just visit the site from time to time, reading what I say or 2)use a tool called an aggregator to have my posts automatically delivered to her desktop, email, or browser window. There's only, like, a bajillion of them out there for every mainstream platform (lest you think I'm pushing some Mac thing on you). Same for me; I see her new posts every (whatever).
5. We link to each other, increasing our "google juice". We use things like Trackback, thereby forming an additional "layer" of linkage based on more than just "go read this".
6. We each have comments enabled in our sites, allowing feedback and conversation.
See? Go read up on FOAF and similar crap for a discussion of one idea for social networks on the web. I have had a number of ideas about social networks...
There is no need to do anything but use the web for what it is.
And here's the best part: no ads. no trolls. no nothing you don't want! And you get the thrill of being part of something cutting edge, the thrill of owning your own destiny, and all that stuff.
You have nothing to lose but your chains, bad HTML, that shitty green, and idiot editors.
So. In closing. Fuck slashdot. I'm done, too. If you want to know about me and my life, neurobashing.com is where I'll be. You can email me at gregg@neurobashing.com or threegee@mac.com or just post to the site and I'll find you. If you want to get something happening - like space on my site - drop me an email.

I thought he was talking about a new idea, not just the internet idea. The thing is, I think most people simply have room for only a few sites. The only way to break off is an RSS feed. One site RSS's a buncha others and is your 'central' site. But just having a bookmark list full of blogs usually results in picking one or two favorites and eventually getting out of touch with the rest.
