Previous conversations on this topic have hinted that a systemic difference between the UK and the US is who pays to connect a phone call. As I recall it, in the UK, the caller pays the per-minute charges to connect to whomever they are calling. In the US, the recipient is paying to have phone service available. In this configuration, spammers have no disincentive to calling as the recipient paid to make the line available.

Thank you stevel. #4 is maddening to me. I've been using Roboform for years now and generate passwords, even for crap websites. Sites that prevent autofill are maddening and require me to copy paste my password from the vault.

Designers, use throttles to prevent password stuffing on your web forms, not limitations to legitimate uses.

You don't have to. Ruckus wireless included this feature in their access points 5-7 years ago. They are used in schools and hospitals to know where people are that need to be located quickly. I imagine other vendors have started including this feature in their higher end access points, too. They also rely on the implementation of multiple antennas in the AP to determine which direction the signal/response came from.

Multiple APs can triangulate a position, but a single one can still give a good idea.

Ruckus also used to have software to map your space (with building materials and such) that might be good enough now to actually identify where someone is while accommodating for construction interference. Haven't sold these devices in ~5 years, so I'm not up on the most current features.

As noted by another commenter. 44% of Americans don't pay any income taxes, so the "vast majority" is already eliminated. I'd also question your assertion about paying 20-30% taxes. On 30% on $100,000 (not the actual rate, just an example) would be taxed this year as 30% on $76,000 which is only 22.8% effective tax rate.

The actual tax rate for $100,000 gross would be at the 12% tax bracket for tax year 2018 (for couples filing jointly) after the 24,000 standard deduction is applied.

Without doing the additional math, I suspect anyone subject to a 30% effective tax rate is already making enough money to pay the accountants to make that number not happen (as is what this whole story is about).

Website Sells Pubic Lice 319

A British website called crabrevenge.com will help you prove that there is literally nothing you can't find online by selling you pubic lice. A disclaimer on the site says the creators "do not endorse giving people lice," and the lice are for "novelty purposes only." The company also boasts about a facility "where we do all of our parasite husbandry and carefully considered selective breeding." Three different packages are available: "Green package - One colony that can lay as many as 30 eggs for about $20. Blue package - Three colonies to share with your friends or freeze a batch or two for about $35. Red package - A vial of 'shampoo-resistant F-strain crabs' which can take up to two weeks to kill for about $52."

Amazon Reviewers Take on the Classics 272

Not everyone is a fan of great literature. In particular, reviewers on Amazon can be quite critical of some of the best loved classics. Jeanette DeMain takes a look at some of the most hated famous books according to some short tempered reviewers. One of my favorites is the review of Charlotte's Web which reads in part, "Absolutely pointless book to read. I felt no feelings towards any of the characters. I really didn't care that Wilbur won first prize. And how in the world does a pig and a spider become friends? It's beyond me. The back of a cereal box has more excitement than this book. I was forced to read it at least five times and have found it grueling. Even as a child I found the plot very far-fetched. It is because of this horrid book that I eat sausage every morning and tell my dad to kill every spider I see ..."

At some point, don't the ISPs risk their common carrier status? They like the protection of saying they don't know what the traffic is that is flowing around their network, then they try to work with the media companies to block downloads of copyrighted material. If they know it is copyrighted material from an unauthorized source, then they no longer can claim to not know what the traffic is.

iPhone Users Angry Over AT&T Upgrade Policy 789

All is not sweetness and light in the wake of the Apple WWDC kickoff announcements, especially concerning the evolution of the iPhone. Reader Hugh Pickens writes: "AT&T will offer the new iPhone 3G S when it debuts later this month at a cost of $199 and $299 for the 16GB and 32GB models, but only to new customers and those who qualify for the discounted price. AT&T subscribers with an iPhone 3G who are not eligible for an upgrade — those not near the end of their two-year contracts — will have to pay $200 more — $399 for the 16GB model and $499 for the 32GB model. 'This is ridiculous and slap in the face to long-time loyal iPhone customers like me who switched from T-Mobile and the only reason was the iPhone,' writes one unhappy iPhone customer. 'We have to mount a vigorous campaign to change this policy. Call your local AT&T and ask for the manager and complain. Send e-mails and post in forums everywhere.' The issue is spurring heavy debate on support discussion forums, with some customers supporting AT&T. 'The option you have is to honor the contract you freely committed yourself to,' says one forum member. 'If you want to upgrade early then you will have to pay full price with no subsidy discount. You can't blame anyone but yourself for your predicament.'"

City Slicker Birds Shun Their Country Cousins 95

According to scientists, city Great Tits prefer other city Great Tits over country Great Tits. (Lets act like adults). The researchers found that the city dwellers responded more strongly to songs of fellow city dwellers and the same held true for the bumpkins. The average minimum pitch of male Great Tit songs in noisy urban areas was higher than in quieter, rural areas just a few miles away. Dr Rupert Marshall, of Aberystwyth University, Wales, and his team recorded bird song in 20 different cities in Britain. He says, "People speak louder and higher in noisy places like pubs and bars but still recognise their friends' voices once they go outside. Great tits seem to learn the high notes from their neighbours but don't respond as strongly to lower rural tones even when it's quiet."
