He didn't say the operating system was 7 years old, he said the system was 7 years old. I have a 5 year old Windows 2000 system, but Windows 2000 wasn't made 5 years ago.
I've never been canoeing before, but I imagine there must be just a few simple heuristics you have to remember... Yes, don't fall out, and don't hit rocks.
