Google Kills Yahoo Ad Deal 79
mytrip writes "Google has pulled the plug on on a search-ad partnership with Yahoo that would have given Yahoo major new revenue but that raised antitrust concerns. 'After four months of review, including discussions of various possible changes to the agreement, it's clear that government regulators and some advertisers continue to have concerns about the agreement,' said David Drummond, Google's chief legal officer in a blog post Wednesday."

Apple licensed 1-click in 2000 so they could launch iTunes unfettered. Judging that they turned that into the #3 music retailer online or offline (and with less overhead than their offline counterparts), I'd say their licensing of the Amazon patent turned out to be a smart idea. Hindsight 20-20 and all.
Two weeks ago Apple turned a $60m Burst.com lawsuit jackpot into chump change, and they get access to Burst's patent portfolio for what amounts to $5m. I'm not saying it's right or wrong, I'm just sayin'.

Wi-Fi Phones Reviewed 77

Dr. Dobb's Journal runs a review of 6 wireless phone devices available on the market today. The cheapest ones start around $80, but lock you into T-Mobile branded hotspots. The more expensive ones, Sony Mylo in particular, offer support for 3rd party clients, such as Skype, GTalk and Yahoo! Messenger."

How Do You Advocate Linux in 5 Minutes? 618
xtracto writes "I just returned from buying certain Linux magazine. While looking at the 'Computing' stand in the library, and right after I grabbed a copy of the Linux magazine, a guy asked me if I used Linux. After that, the man told me he had tried to use Linux, but he had found it difficult. I told him the first things that came to my mind: that it depended on the distribution (he tried Kubuntu). I recommended him to look for a Linux User Group near his hometown (he told me he didn't live near a city). What would you tell these kinds of people? Not so long ago, and to my surprise, a relative who is completely computer illiterate started talking about Linux, but the general thought is that 'it is harder than Windows'. How do you advocate Linux to people who are more comfortable using Windows?"

You know, I love seeing these things on the big screen, and I'll definitely see this in the next week or two, but I honestly get more excited for the extended DVD.
I didn't see the Fellowship until it hit the second-run theater, but I bought the extended DVD the day it came out. I saw TTT a couple of weeks after it hit theaters. It was awesome; totally glad I did it, but I bought the DVD the day it came out.
The theatrical release just feels like a particularly satisfying preview to me.
