I too used to work in the nonprofit sector in IT. I believe you are headed in the right direction with your project. Here is what I suggest - remember your audience. If you are trying to increase professionalism and decrease the chaos for nonprofit workers - give them a tool they can understand and find value in. Try out a Wiki - nonprofit workers are, by nature, people persons. They like to feel connected to people and prefer doing that to reading a big and potentially boring document. Sell Wikis as a way of reaching out to other people. Encourage them to find other concrete uses for whatever technology you pick, such as donor management. Again, remember your audience.
