I have to admit, I disagree with you strongly here. CGI is good, and as someone else around here said, it's a great tool for a director to realize his vision. But it's still not perfect (which means it can still detract from a shot). Furthermore, all CGI and no story becomes a cartoon without a plot.

The Pod race was cool to look at, but I still thought it sucked incredibly hard. The ESPN-esque announcers completely killed any feeling I had that I was in a galaxy far far away and the acting just made my ears bleed.

On top of that, putting in the cast of Willow (was E.T. in that shot or another shot) also distracted me. CGI alone could not save it. The light saber battle at the end is a perfect example og great CGI. Really awesome things were going on and the CGI just enhanced it that much more.

I can't see a movie just for the CGI, especially since so many movies are so full of eye candy these days. It's almost the standard to have awesome CGI visuals, the successful films will have to offer more (or have a Star Wars in front of the title).
