Publishing contracts are deliberately designed to shortchange authors: you'll earn a tiny percentage of royalties, but you won't get paid until you've earned a certain sum, and, oh yeah, royalty payments have an expiration krunker date, so by the time you've earned enough to get paid, the few cents you'd have earned from someone who paid $30 for a copy of your article in 2008 no longer apply.
