Parallels isn't a "complete virtual machine", it's just the same x86-on-x86 technology that's been around for a decade in VMWare, VirtualPC, Xen etc. That's why it only runs on Intel Macs. The only reason that Mac users are so impressed with it, and do goofy things like videotaping their monitor screens and uploading the video to YouTube, is because they're used to having to reboot between OSX and OS9 to get legacy applications running. (speaking of breaking things on revision...)

And speaking more about breaking things on revision, this is exactly Microsoft's strategy for backwards-compatibility. Witness their release of timebombed VirtualPC images with IE6 to support app-specific problems. They'll be breaking backwards-compatibility with the OS soon enough.

So actually I think that graham is right, if a bit myopic - to make Haiku a "killer OS" it needs to be able to host VMs of itself and other x86 OSes out of the starting gate. Good job they're developing in VMs from the beginning.
