You're not the only one!

It was impossible for me to relate to any of the characters in the movie because they were portrayed in such a shallow way. I can't think of one character other than the main alien dude (Christopher) who seemed to have any complexity at all to him or her. Everyone was just a boring idiot, and the characters seemed of secondary concern to watching people blow up, rather than a way of getting people to relate to the movie and the issues it brings up.

I didn't have terribly high expectations, but I still wish a movie could do realistic character development and drama while being an awesome action film at the same time. Hell, I'd even take some lame, pop sci-fi movie like Independence Day over District 9. At least I can relate to some corny speech by the president of the US. Wikus being a selfish coward and Christopher still promising to come back and fix his stupid arm, not so much.

As a web developer/designer, things like this irk me. When I design a website it is standards-compliant and looks how I intend it to, for what I think are good reasons. Empowering users to further mess with my presentation of my website is bothersome.

As a web user, things like this make me glad. I will be glad if I am given more control of the presentation of poorly-designed websites, because I really don't have any sympathy for someone who designs a site that hinders me from obtaining the information that the site is supposed to be giving me.

Tools like this are not inherently good or bad. People may use them to the detriment of their experience on the web (if they somehow degrade a site's visual appeal or function [not that the two things go hand-in-hand]), or people may use them to make their experiences on the web more efficient, productive, and enjoyable. I say more power to tools like this, because people should be able to have a say about how content is presented on their computers. And perhaps once poor web design dies (as if this will ever happen), the web developer/designer views the web in a different way, or the browser changes the way it presents websites, tools like this will either go out of fashion or become more integral to our idea of what the web is.

I realize that a few people have asked variations of this question, but I have yet to read a convincing answer. Why? I understand that there are benefits to both the userland and kernel of FreeBSD as well as Debian, but if you desire certain features of the Debian userland on a FreeBSD system or features of the FreeBSD kernel on a Debian system, why not work with the developers of the relevant project to implement the features? This seems like kind of a roundabout way of reaching whatever goals this is intended on achieving. I'm open to arguments for the value of this project, but I have yet to see a convincing one.

I've heard this argument often: that you have nothing to worry about unless you are committing a crime. The issue isn't so much that I want to hide criminal activities from the government as it is that giving the government the power to, for example, see what library books I have checked out, places a ridiculous amount of power and oversight in the hands of an entity that I do not implicitly trust to be wise with this power.

Hypothetically, since the government now has this power, they could decide in the future to crack down on dissent way more hardcore than they do currently. So now I have some book checked out that is on some sort of watchlist, I talk about something on the web that is deemed unsavory, or I take a position or stand up for something that causes me to become an alleged threat to whatever the government claims to be protecting; next thing I know, I'm in jail awaiting trial under some new law.

Bottom line is, the ability to invade privacy and conduct unwarranted searches places more power in the hands of the government than I am comfortable with.
