Why Text Messages Are Limited To 160 Characters 504

The LA Times has a story about Friedhelm Hillebrand, one of the communications researchers behind efforts to standardize various cell phone technologies. In particular, he worked out the 160 character limit for text messages. "Hillebrand sat at his typewriter, tapping out random sentences and questions on a sheet of paper. As he went along, Hillebrand counted the number of letters, numbers, punctuation marks and spaces on the page. Each blurb ran on for a line or two and nearly always clocked in under 160 characters. That became Hillebrand's magic number ... Looking for a data pipeline that would fit these micro messages, Hillebrand came up with the idea to harness a secondary radio channel that already existed on mobile networks. This smaller data lane had been used only to alert a cellphone about reception strength and to supply it with bits of information regarding incoming calls. ... Initially, Hillebrand's team could fit only 128 characters into that space, but that didn't seem like nearly enough. With a little tweaking and a decision to cut down the set of possible letters, numbers and symbols that the system could represent, they squeezed out room for another 32 characters.

What Do You Call People Who "Do HTML"? 586

gilgongo writes "It's more than 10 years since people started making a living writing web page markup, yet the job title (and role) has yet to settle down. Not only that, but there are different types of people who write markup: those that approach the craft as essentially an integration task, and those that see it as part of UI design overall. The situation is further complicated by the existence of other roles in the workplace such as graphic designer and information architect. This is making recruitment for this role a real headache. So, how do you describe people who 'do HTML' (and CSS and maybe a bit of JavaScript and graphics manipulation)? Some job titles I've seen include: Design Technologist, Web Developer, Front-end Developer, HTML/CSS Developer, Client-side Developer and UI Engineer. Do you have any favourite job titles for this role?"

I wanted to enjoy the game, but there were plenty of problems.
1. Gathering skills. You must get these impossibly rare drops from your gathering skills to continue to the next level of gathering. I gathered over 300 cotton looking for that rare drop. It never happened. I might have been able to justify it if I could have reasonably sold the cotton. The auction house system was too flawed to justify selling the cotton in this fashion.

2. Lack of choice. Once you hit level 50, you have one and only one zone to kill in on your own. Otherwise, you must group up and those groups just were not happening due to the lack of players. A person "should" be able to solo if they so choose.

3. PVP was not happening at lower levels. I do not know whether this was due to lack of player involvement or some game restriction.

I am glad I got out. The graphics were pretty good, but there were enough annoyances to make me run away and never look back.
