Comment Tips for those going (Score 1) 174
Spent two weeks this past June in Slovakia visiting relatives.
Some tips:
1) Pivo- beer, lager, pilsner is quite good and cheap (sorry not free). Prices varied from 10sk to 30sk a half liter (20 cents to 75 cents approx). I think Banska Bystrica may be the home of Zlaty Bazant (Golden Pheasant)- a very popular and very good beer. And for those whose don't drink beer, go for the Kofola, a cola that is pretty darn good, IMHO.
2) I did not hike the trails in the low Tatras, but the trails in the high Tatras were great, but challenging. The trails we hicked did not have distances- they listed times between points. I am convinced they used a mountain goat to get those times. YMMV.
3) Was nice to not see a McDonalds or Starbucks in two weeks, though I have no idea why people pass off Nescafe as coffee. Was seriously missing my cup of Peet's. The food in the restaurants was quite good and quite cheap, by US standards.
