I've seen comments that downtown Denver has never recovered from the COVID exodus, so maybe the economic knock-on damage of emptied business districts is worrying more decision-makers than you might think. A purely personal theory is that many managers are extrovert types, and many want the audience that 3D employees provide. I'm sure it does not help them assess how much or well their employees are actually working. How many of us have experienced performance management/assessment systems requiring us to "sell" our achievements to managers who clearly don't already know who has done what.

I worked for a big tech company that took computer security very seriously & reckoned they had trouble finding enough good people to do it. Last year even they laid off some of their specialists. STM breaches are now so common & frequent that "reputational damage" is no longer a concern. It may be felt "cheaper" to offer the usual insincere apologies & pay for some credit monitoring than to spend the money required to try to achieve effective security.
