Comment no such thing as "exactly" for temperature (Score 1) 177

Another stupid article stating stupid things: "even if the actual temperature in a given location is, in fact, 69 degrees." What does it mean when the temperature is actually a certain amount? No such thing exists for weather reports. It may be there at the weather station but nobody actually lives there. How does it make sense to say LA (or any city) bigger than one foot by one foot is one exact temperature?

Comment poor people don't choose to sacrifice (Score 1) 160

"Poor people generally don't employ accountants in order to minimise their tax bills; large-scale tax avoidance is something that the richest people in the world do, and — I suggested to him — may weaken the collective sacrifice." In fact, nobody ever chooses to sacrifice. I guess the BBC doesn't seem to understand human nature much at all.

Comment Since when is law based on the spirit? (Score 1) 183

Why is this considered "abuse"? Lawyers have been known to use every single mechanism and read every single letter of the millions of pages of law on the books. That's why everybody knows a good lawyer is worth its weight in gold. That's the foundation of the legal system, because the law is only as good as it is written. There is no such thing as "intent" of the law. That would have no standing in the court. Saying "I know Congress wrote this, but they meant that." Really? Slashdotters are just as stupid as the masses. This is an attack on the law as we know it. Disclaimer: I have less than $40,000 in my Roth IRA, have no feasible way of reaching anything close to the amounts described in the article.

When will the government learn it is better to train their populace to not be so idiotically stupid as to believe everything told them? My friend realized from long ago that it is cheaper to go to Target to buy something than order it online from Amazon. Most of us on slashdot (hopefully know) there is no such thing as a free lunch. Just because a company is a tech company doesn't mean that saying isn't free. Remember when a Congressman asked facebook how they make money if they give everything away for free?

Comment makes sense for lesser school (Score 1) 82

Top-notch schools don't teach you practical stuff so that you can be productive right after graduation. What is a Harvard MBA worth practically? Not much. Theoretically ... a whole lot! But Cal State (CSU) schools are lower tier public universities in California (upper tier is University of California, UC). After graduating from a Cal State employers probably want someone who can produce right away. Video games and esports is fine for them. If they can make a living from it, great. In fact, many students are already working before graduation (average length of stay is 6 years for Cal State Long Beach, IIRC)

Comment Re:when is it ever smart to trust end-users? (Score 1) 105

Actually your bank will put blocks on what you do with your money. Ever heard of this thing called a "hold"? Whereby you deposit a large sum of money and cannot access it for some not-predetermined amount of time? And then there is the run on the bank. Which makes you realize that you give the bank your money and they spend it right away. And cannot give it back.

Comment Re:finally a good read (Score 1) 58

I know one educated (old) Chinese person who says you need to know at least 10,000 characters to be "acceptable" in Chinese. Simplified obviously takes many characters and makes them the same. But even in English it is similar. The NIV Bible tried to limit the number of different words to 500 (I think, definitely less than 1000). But I'm sure a high school preparing for the SAT knows more than that. But the point is you can probably get by with way less than 5,000 Chinese characters.

Comment what about the Singapore variant? (Score 5, Informative) 198

If the government were truly concerned about misinformation maybe they will investigate why they called out a "Singapore variant" that doesn't actually exist? Anyway, as far as most are concerned, this is the Indian variant. Many times variants are named after their discoverers or locales discovered.
