Okay! Okay! I can understand the complaints about having to remember 10 digits but most people remember there social security numbers which are nine digits and most people can retain a whole list of phone numbers in their heads. I think that this is the right step for now because otherwise everyone couldn't have a phone number. I think that new technology that would allow high bandwidth in each home would be easier. So that you could access a phone number via a global "online" database via built in systems. Not necessarily through a whole computer setup. Maybe more like a built in pda with video telephone conferencing via high bandwith wireless internet access. New protocols and technology are being developed everyday for this. The FCC just gave a wireless company the go ahead for 10mbps wireless internet access, and another company has 11 mbps.
