Comment Am I the only female on Slashdot? (Score 1) 686

I feel like it.

First of all, men are more for the dog eat dog competition while females choose to help first and compete second, in comparison to males. Because of this females tend to stick in groups. If we are alone and surrounded by sausages it takes away the advantage and comfort we are use to.

When I went to college (I'm only 22, so not that long ago.) there was more females in my comp sci classes than males. When I went to Intel there was more females to males hired. However, all it takes is one asshat guy to come in and be disrespectful enough to push us away. We will go be in our group somewhere else by transferring to a different part of the company.

Not only that but females have more non work issues to deal with that pulls us away. We also have to deal with promotional issues. Men brag to others about what they do for their ego, for what makes them feel good. Females tend to help each other to feel good. With the exception of the few are willing to segregate ourselves out from the crowd and push forward in the work world.

I can say a lot under the subject but take it with a grain of salt. My personal experience often varies from the majority and I'm not trying to create a stereotype.

Comment PRO-IP Act (Score 1) 268

According to wikipedia the history of the law that ties Obama into appointing a copyright czar is:

"On 2007-12-05 introduced into the House of Representatives by John Conyers. [3]
On 2008-05-08 the House of Representatives passed the bill 410 to 11. 2008 Presidential candidates Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich are among those who voted against the bill.[4][5] The Senate bill was S 3325.[6]
On 2008-10-13 President George W. Bush signed the bill into law."

More crap being blamed on Obama yet again on Slashdot? What is with you guys? I'm no Obama fan but I don't blindly point fingers at others either.

White House Holding Piracy Summit 268

DesScorp writes in to let us know about a White House piracy summit, which is going on this afternoon. Judging by the press accounts, the sort of intellectual property criminals they are interested in are large-scale DVD bootleggers, not individual downloaders. "Hollywood once again demonstrates its close ties to Washington DC, regardless of who is in power, with a White House summit on piracy to be attended by the top executives in Hollywood, as well as the music industry. Vice President Joe Biden will be leading the summit to discuss organized cooperation between the federal government and the entertainment industry on all matters of piracy. Also at the summit will be the Obama Administration's new Copyright Czar, Victoria Espinal. The summit comes after Congress has earmarked $30 million dollars of taxpayer funds for anti-piracy efforts." According to one attendee's tweet, the press was kicked out of the meeting around 20:45 GMT.

Australia Could Finally Get R18+ Games 143

angry tapir writes "Australia may finally get an adults only, R18+ classification for computer games, with the federal government releasing a discussion paper summarizing the key arguments for and against an R18+ classification. Submissions are currently being sought from the community on whether the Australian National Classification Scheme should include an R18+ category for computer and video games. In the past the board responsible for classifying games and movies has banned some titles outright because of the lack of an adults only classification — Aliens Vs. Predator is just the most recent in a long line. The Attorney-General's report on the issue is available online."

"Loud Commercial" Legislation Proposed In US Congress 636

Hackajar writes "Have you ever caught yourself running for the volume control when a TV commercial comes on? Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA) has, and is submitting legislation that would require TV commercials in the US to stay at volume levels similar to the programming they are associated with. From the article: 'Right now, the government doesn't have much say in the volume of TV ads. It's been getting complaints ever since televisions began proliferating in the 1950s. But the FCC concluded in 1984 there was no fair way to write regulations controlling the "apparent loudness" of commercials.'"

Secret Copyright Treaty Timeline Shows Global DMCA 184

An anonymous reader writes "Michael Geist, a leading critic of the ACTA secret copyright treaty, has produced a new interactive timeline that traces its development. The timeline includes links to leaked documents, videos, and public interest group letters that should generate increasing concern with a deal that could lead to a global three-strikes and you're out policy."

$860 Million In Fines Handed Out For LCD Price-Fixing 151

eldavojohn writes "Six companies have pleaded guilty to worldwide price fixing of Thin-Film Transistor Liquid Crystal Displays from Sept. 14, 2001, to Dec. 1, 2006. For violating the Sherman Act, the companies have agreed to pay criminal fines of over $860 Million. In addition, nine executives have been charged in the scandal. The pricing scam affected some of the largest companies at the time, including Apple, HP and Dell. (If you bought a TFT-LCD from them in that time frame, you may be one of the victimized consumers.) From the DOJ release, 'According to the charge, Chi Mei carried out the conspiracy by agreeing during meetings, conversations and communications to charge prices of TFT-LCD panels at certain pre-determined levels and issuing price quotations in accordance with the agreements reached. As a part of the conspiracy, Chi Mei exchanged information on sales of TFT-LCD panels for the purpose of monitoring and enforcing adherence to the agreed-upon prices.'"

Comment MERGE (Score 1) 222

This is exactly what was happening. Hulu is owned by NBC. First, comcast adds a monthly cap the second hulu becomes popular. This doesn't work as well as intended and comcast now has a giant competitor. What does Comcast do? They merge with NBC. wa-la! Comcast is still a monopoly in many areas.

I live out in the forest. I get 1 OTA (2 if I put the antenna on the roof) channels, and I'd have to cut holes in the trees to get sat. Also, since I'm right off the ocean I have a feeling the fog bank wouldn't help. Comcast out here has a monopoly.
