https://scitechdaily.com/the-a... “Our team was the first to experimentally verify the effect,” said Elmers. The researchers used a specially adapted momentum microscope. For their experiment, the team exposed a thin layer of ruthenium dioxide to X-rays. The resulting excitation of the electrons was sufficient for their emission from the ruthenium dioxide layer and their detection. Based on the velocity distribution, the researchers were able to determine the velocity of the electrons in the ruthenium dioxide. And using circularly polarized X-rays, they were even able to infer the spin directions.

Aren't the risks being incorrectly counted? Lets assume there is a magnetic erasure process that has a 0% chance of data recovery. Passing the drive through that machine is then equivalent to shredding. The real risk is that the drive does not go through the process. I suppose then the argument might be "If you cannot sell the drives then any such drive will be destroyed when discovered" ... but will it? Seems like the "zero risk" label on current practices is at best a misnomer -- could there be a financial incentive? Like, manufacturers requiring this to reduce overall market supply in return for lower sales prices on new equipment.
