Affymetrix makes DNA microarrays, which is fairly recent tech that has exploded in use. However, even though they are the most capable of all the companies, they can only fit about 400,000 probes on an array at one time. (Their nearest competitor offers only 10,000).

However, to put the ENTIRE genome on a single chip, you need about 1,600,000 probes. They are working on that right now.

So the author is not wrong.
