Submission + - Photosynth gets a little competition (3dtubeme.com)

andres32a writes: Using existing open-source Structure From Motion Libraries and incorporating a WebGL pointcloud viewer, we have created a new website called 3dtubeme.com that allows users to create and share on the web amazing 3d models using virtually any digital camera. Point clouds are dramatically denser than photosynth and best of all... it works on any WebGL browser!

Best Introduction To Programming For Bright 11-14-Year-Olds? 962

firthisaword writes "I will be teaching an enrichment programming course to 11-14 year old gifted children in the Spring. It is meant as an introduction to very basic programming paradigms (conditions, variables, loops, etc.), but the kids will invariably have a mix of experience in dealing with computers and programming. The question: Which programming language would be best for starting these kids off on? I am tempted by QBasic which I remember from my early days — it is straightforward and fast, if antiquated and barely supported under XP. Others have suggested Pascal which was conceived as an instructional pseudocode language. Does anyone have experience in that age range? Anything you would recommend? And as a P.S: Out of the innumerable little puzzles/programs/tasks that novice programmers get introduced to such as Fibonacci numbers, primes or binary calculators, which was the most fun and which one taught you the most?" A few years ago, a reader asked a similar but more general question, and several questions have focused on how to introduce kids to programming. Would you do anything different in teaching kids identified as academically advanced?

Comment What about the "give many" option? (Score 1) 165

I just contacted OLPC for the "give many" option, since i'm looking for 120 laptops for the school that i run located in Latin America. I got a response from someone from brightstarcorp.com the same day indicating the price and asking for a shiping address so he could send me the official quote. So once i get the quote our school will be wiring 36'000 usd plus shipping... should i be worried?

That's a good point. I find that people who have a real problem with Scientology either have problems with religion in general, and find Scientology an easy target, or are Christians who are don't want any distractions from the Savior's message. Notice the anti-Mormon and anti Christian posts here on this topic.

I am a Scientologist. I am because I have read and applied the information I found freely in books and other published materials of Scientology and found it to be workable and worthwhile. I am fully aware of the controversies and problems surrounding our religion. I feel profoundly for those who have been victims of either bad people and/or bad policy. And yet, I remain. Why?

Why is a Catholic a Catholic despite pedophile priests and the Inquisition? Why is an atheist an atheist despite the legacies and atrocities of Stalin, Marx, and Mao? Why is a Muslim a Muslim despite radical Islam? Why is a Baptist a Baptist despite Televangelists?

Because there is something profound and meaningful underneath all the BS that rings of Truth.

I have studied religion and biological science deeply. I found that Truth is universal. To me, Scientology helps me organize that Truth.

Journal Journal: Slashdot search suckage

Why is Google better at finding old Slashdot stories than Slashdot is?

I was trying to find some old story I remembered about some TV executive that said that all people who skip commercials are thieves.

I typed my query into Google:

site:slashdot.org PVR commercial theft

Result: The exact story I was looking for was the top result.

Journal Journal: BBC Reporter a lunatic? 1

As the story unfolds John Sweeney did not only once throw his journalistic principles overboard. A new video leaked today showing him at the London premiere of Wildhogs in March 2007. Sweeney is standing in a drove of fans ranting like a "deranged person" at actor John Travolta who had arrived to promote his newest movie. I really wonder how the BBC can keep this guy: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0YM9rsQW_E

Submission + - Japanese Government to Move to OSS

An anonymous reader writes: linuxworld has an article on Japanese government's plan to reduce its reliance on a single IT vendor by moving to open source softwares.

Oracle, NEC, IBM, HP, Hitachi and Dell are among 10 IT equipment and software vendors that are forming a consortium to develop and sell Linux-based servers and computers for the Japanese market. The move by the vendors to collaborate on Linux in Japan comes from a edict from the country's government to make Linux and open source a priority for all IT procurements, starting this July.
Specifically, it looks to reduce Windows as the server OS.

The government has said explicitly it wants to decrease its reliance on Microsoft as a server operating system platform.

The Good Fortune of Wii Exercise 81

eldavojohn writes "While some users of the Wii complained of soreness or 'Wii elbow' when playing it too much, others are heralding its workout value. The University of Toronto is working on a 'therapeutic video game' for the Wii that is designed to help children with hemiplegic cerebral palsy exercise their weaker limb, people are claiming weight loss and in the January issue of Pediatrics the Mayo clinic is proposing that gaming systems like the Wii can combat child obesity."
