All this says to me is that Obama didn't tell someone to put their job on hold to go gift shopping. Symbolic or not, any gift between leaders is just useless objects that someone will get paid to dust off every now and then. Like him or not, Obama is a practical man. He probably gives his family gift cards at christmas time so that they can get what they really want instead of waiting in line to return something they didn't really want.

there is perhaps a more important reason to not lock down the computers. The easiest way to keep students from destroying their laptops is to let them do whatever they want on them. If students are allowed to use them for their personal lives they will then have a stake in the computer and will actually care if they break it. Not being able to listen to their music and get on myspace is damn good motivation to take care of their computer. Students won't care at all if they can't [insert boring educational use here].

This of course is only about video games in general, and only the social aspect. I think many people will extend this to the argument over violent video games, which is a whole different topic entirely. It also has nothing to do with fat kids who don't get any exercise because they're sitting on their ass all day. Just something to keep in mind before people start making conclusions about everything video game related.

Universal Music Sues MySpace 116

Grooves writes "Universal Music is suing MySpace for copyright infringement. Universal threatened to sue YouTube before the Google acquisition was announced, so now it looks like they have moved on to the next target. Ars speculates that Universal is really after a piece of the action. 'On the morning of the Google-YouTube deal, Universal — along with Sony BMG and CBS — signed a licensing agreement with YouTube. If MySpace were to sign a similar agreement with the label, there is little doubt that the lawsuit would disappear.'"

Democrats Take House, Senate Undecided 1090

Every news publication on earth is saying mostly the same thing. The Democrats have taken the house picking up a sizable number of seats. But the Senate remains a tossup with a few undecided seats holding the balance. Concerns of voter fraud have been heard from around the nation as well.

A Cleaner, Cheaper Route to Titanium 335

Burlap writes "Using technology developed at MIT, 4-person startup Avanti Metal hopes to reduce the cost of producing Titanium from the current $40 per pound to a mere $3. The article discusses how a special combinations of oxides and electrolysis separates the titanium metal from the Earth's abundant titanium oxide ore."

2006 Webby Award Winners Announced 116

Wired is reporting that the winners for the 2006 Webby Awards have been announced and the usual suspects have dominated the scene. From the article: "With a record 65 award categories, this year's Webby honorees ranged from well-known sites like the (Washington Post, a popular vote winner for best newspaper site, to more obscure newcomers, like Remember Segregation, named best home page. As in years past, the honoree list included several winners of multiple awards, along with perennial favorites that have won Webbys previously."
