Comment Re:duration of charging issues (Score 2) 112

Maybe you're wrong (on the internet even!!) The Nature paper says:
"The devices produce a sustained voltage of around 0.5 volts across a 7-micrometre-thick film, with a current density of around 17 microamperes per square centimetre. We find the driving force behind this energy generation to be a self-maintained moisture gradient that forms within the film when the film is exposed to the humidity that is naturally present in air. Connecting several devices linearly scales up the voltage and current to power electronics. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of a continuous energy-harvesting strategy"

Sounds promising to me, and I'm usually super skeptical.

It's a marvelously deep but excellently and entertainingly readable discussion of causes of behavior, ranging from molecular processes in neuron synapses in the brain to societal and environmental factors.

Comment tech for re-starting the Gulf Stream? (Score 1) 295

Climate change isn't necessarily gradual. For example, with all the fresh water coming into the north Atlantic from melting Greenland glaciers, the Gulf Stream is slowing and may shut down, no longer warming northern Europe.

It's unlikely that science or technology can provide "ample means of addressing these problems"

Comment Feed cattle some seaweed for 99% less methane (Score 2) 224

This Australian study: https://researchonline.jcu.edu... found that adding seaweed to the diet of cattle reduced their methane emissions by up to 99%. That seems a lot simpler and faster than breeding for reduced methane; in any case the special breeds probably wouldn't have 99% reduction. Let's do both.
