Agreed. Buying my first NAS was a game changer. Even if I also use it to store ESXi VMs running on a NUC, it's still a pretty basic setup. Overengineering is bad. And about backups, I have a USB drive plugged into the NAS. Nothing fancy but that works (and I should buy a second USB drive to store offline and rotate the disk). Anyone being reminded about LTO backups?

Exactly this, I often say to friend "What's your time worth?". If you're unable to do something, work, get paid and pay someone else to do what you're unable to do yourself. If I want to archives tens of GB of photo scans, I prefer to store locally because I know how to do it myself and not willing to pay a lot of cash for cloud services. And yes, I have offline / offsite backups.

Comment Anyone not using Windows Explorer? (Score 2) 85

Since day 1 I've been using Norton Commander (DOS 6.22) and later on its win version. For some reason it kept bugging years ago and I moved to Total Commander. I barely never use built-in Windows Explorer and so am not affected by the news. It's still a great news to flatten learning curve, that's the key selling point of Windows after all. No guru sticker's required to unpack an archive at the proper location keeping the intented parent folder.
