We sacrifice inessential liberties for safety all the time. We are required to get our cars registered and inspected (in some states), our buildings inspected, and our restaurants must conform to code. All of these things restrict our freedom, but also help to keep us safe and healthy.

We need to protect the rights of the majority from; a dodgey car running them over, a dodgey building collapsing on them, some dodgey food poisoning them. Those examples don't restrict any freedoms, they are about protecting them... (@_@)

Remember the Olympic opening ceremonies in Beijing? The "great ships" part of that performance ended with one man holding up a compass -- and following it. That was the whole point of that part of the ceremonies!
