Put the cookies down and pay attention BarbaraHudson, what part of "small business" did you not understand? I didn't say anything about fortune 1000 companies. I said 98% of business is small business... http://sbecouncil.org/about-us... Yes you could lie and upgrade under the guise of assistive technologies, but I support legal SMALL businesses that actually adhere to policy. Since you're obviously all knowing, you do know how long Microsoft will support Dynamics GP versions and how long those versions will run on a deprecated OS? I know it's only enterprise accounting software so it's not really important to business ops right? As far as Fortune 1000 penetration, you're talking out your pie hole, they don't disclose this information. Government isn't even relevant, they're as incompetent as you are. You're obviously a legend in your own mind, the problem is the other posters and I aren't in your mind and we all recognize your complete and utter ignorance. You lost any credibility the moment you stated "just don't go to questionable sites". Now get back in the kitchen where you belong and bake us some cookies.

Tell me more about the OPTIONAL headphone jack.

Okay, I'll tell you more, you have the OPTION not to buy it, you have the OPTION to use a vastly more insecure Android or become an outlaw 1 percenter and use a Windows 10 phone. OR you could by a 6 dollar adapter, just sayin'

Wow, the scariest thing (among many) is that this person's comment was actually tagged "insightful". Insightful regarding what? How ignorant so many users are? Maybe you should reserve your comments for something you actually have some knowledge about, like I dunno, maybe baking cookies? As already mentioned by other commenters... there is no such thing as "questionable sites", malicious ads respect no site's reputation. There is no such thing as "good AV", zero days respect no AV's reputation. Businesses don't "rush" into upgrading because of some overzealous technolust, 98% are small business, they often have hundreds of thousands of dollars tied up in accounting and other types of software that MUST be kept up to date or they lose their support. That means keeping their OS up to date as well. Most can't afford enterprise. Left with a choice of upgrading say 40 copies of Windows 7 Pro to 10 for FREE or waiting past deadline and paying $8000, which do you think a small business is going to do? Don't misconstrue what I'm saying here to mean I like Microsoft, they are the bane of my job. Here is some insight from someone whose livelihood actually depends on keeping these turds polished: ALWAYS run as limited user. DEFER upgrades. Use O&O Shutup 10 for privacy concerns. Use MULTIPLE brands of layered security throughout infrastructure, most are free for home use and reasonable for small business. I'm not going to list brands of door locks that I use except for the most important one... Invincea Endpoint! Their product has stopped ALL malware infections for 3 years running since the day I deployed it on all of the group of companies I protect. Sandboxie is their freeware for home use. I receive no compensation from them but I do gladly pay them.

NCsoft Sued For Making Lineage II 'Too Addictive' 360

An anonymous reader writes "South Korean MMO game publisher NCsoft is finding itself facing another lawsuit, this time for making games that are 'too addictive.' US Lineage II player Craig Smallwood is suing the publisher for $3 million because he found himself playing Lineage II for 20,000 hours over a period of 5 years. At times, his average play session would persist for over 11 hours, crippling his life and ability to function. A federal judge is allowing the court case to go forward (PDF), stating that the plaintiff has a claim for negligence and gross negligence against the publisher."

Ray Kurzweil Responds To PZ Myers 238

On Tuesday we discussed a scathing critique of Ray Kurzweil's understanding of the brain written by PZ Myers. Reader Amara notes that Kurzweil has now responded on his blog. Quoting: "Myers, who apparently based his second-hand comments on erroneous press reports (he wasn't at my talk), [claims] that my thesis is that we will reverse-engineer the brain from the genome. This is not at all what I said in my presentation to the Singularity Summit. I explicitly said that our quest to understand the principles of operation of the brain is based on many types of studies — from detailed molecular studies of individual neurons, to scans of neural connection patterns, to studies of the function of neural clusters, and many other approaches. I did not present studying the genome as even part of the strategy for reverse-engineering the brain."

The REX Robotic Exoskeleton 53

ElectricSteve writes "When Robert Irving was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, it was the catalyst for him and his childhood friend, Richard Little, to turn their engineering skills to the task of developing an exoskeleton that was a practical, standing-and-walking alternative to wheelchairs. The result is REX, an exoskeleton made of strong, lightweight materials that is designed to support and hold a person comfortably as he moves. Users strap themselves in to the robotic legs with a number of Velcro and buckled straps that fit around the legs, along with a belt around the waist. While most robotic exoskeletons we've looked at, such as the HAL, augment human motion, this is generally not an option for wheelchair-bound users, so REX is controlled using a joystick that sits at the wearer's waist level." The rig is expected to cost $150K when introduced later this year in New Zealand. Gizmag has an obnoxious timed popover subscription nag, so NoScript is indicated.

NetApp Threatens Sellers of Appliances Running ZFS 231

eldavojohn writes "ZFS is licensed under the CDDL and is considered to be open source, but NetApp is sending threatening legal letters to startups who look to offer ZFS on NAS appliances. This assault on Coraid has a few people worried about the future of ZFS as NetApp rears its ugly head yet again. The CEO of Coraid replied to NetApp's demands, saying, 'We made the decision to suspend shipment after receiving a legal threat letter from NetApp Inc., suggesting that the open-source ZFS file system planned for inclusion with our EtherDrive Z-Series infringes NetApp patents.' Will NetApp effectively destroy any future ZFS might have enjoyed?"

Building a 10 TB Array For Around $1,000 227

As storage hardware costs continue to plummet, the folks over at Tom's Hardware have decided to throw together their version of the "Über RAID Array." While the array still doesn't stack up against SSDs for access time, a large array is capable of higher throughput via striping. Unfortunately, the amount of work required to assemble a setup like this seems to make it too much trouble for anything but a fun experiment. "Most people probably don't want to install more than a few hard drives into their PC, as it requires a massive case with sufficient ventilation as well as a solid power supply. We don't consider this project to be something enthusiasts should necessarily reproduce. Instead, we set out to analyze what level of storage performance you'd get if you were to spend the same money as on an enthusiast processor, such as a $1,000 Core i7-975 Extreme. For the same cost, you could assemble 12 1 TB Samsung Spinpoint F1 hard drives. Of course, you still need a suitable multi-port controller, which is why we selected Areca's ARC-1680iX-20."
