As for my own opinion, needless to say, Scream 3 fails one of the prerequisites of a good film: it relies on too many popular culture references.
Kind of off-topic, but I just have to mention it. To me, the above is one of the main reasons why Star Wars: TPM was so bad. Everything about it screamed "instant gratification" for me. Appeal to all the pop culture freaks, never mind the fact that 20 years from now, people won't get the references.
