Microsoft Clears MechWarrior4 Free Launch 131

Vamman writes "If you've been following the drama surrounding the free release of MechWarrior4, then you're probably aware that the initial announcement, made last summer, was a bit premature. Now, nearly a year since that announcement was made, MekTek Studios has announced that Microsoft Legal has given clearance for the free release of Mechwarrior4. This move by Microsoft Games couldn't come at a better time for the community, as the owners of MechWarrior are attempting a reboot of the franchise."

Not very good in my experience. I've worked repairing printers for the past few years so I've been able to get a good look at quality of build on these things. This definitely has put me off of telling anyone to get a Brother machine ever again. For the money it seems to me like buying a refurbished midline HP laser is a good way to go. Something in the 4000/4200 series. Also, I don't get why people insist on Lexmark/Dell machines. Messy as hell, problematic, badly fitting peripherals and pain in the ass maintenance.

I haven't work on as many printers as MayonakaHa, but I have bought 6 Brother laser printers over the last 5 years for myself and my parents, and have successfully weaned them off of buying crappy inkjets. The Brother HL1440 printer I bought in 2003 is still at my parents house on the original cartridge cranking out great print quality. YMMV, but my Brothers are great.

MS Researchers Call Moving Server Storage To SSDs a Bad Idea 292

An anonymous reader writes "As an IT administrator did you ever think of replacing disks by SSDs? Or using SSDs as an intermediate caching layer? A recent paper by Microsoft researchers provides detailed cost/benefit analysis for several real workloads. The conclusion is that, for a range of typical enterprise workloads, using SSDs makes no sense in the short to medium future. Their price needs to decrease by 3-3000 times for them to make sense. Note that this paper has nothing to do with laptop workloads, for which SSDs probably make more sense (due to SSDs' ruggedness)."

Sorry to sound like a troll, but what do we stand to gain from analyzing all this data? How does making contact with aliens address any of the domestic problems we have? Wouldn't a more efficient use of resources be to support the Folding@home which will actually yield useful information about protein structure? And yes, I have the same criticism about Prime95 as well.
Which option benefits mankind:
1. Understanding how proteins work, which leads to medical advancements.
2. Yay! A new prime number! Let's call it OMGPONIES.
3. OMG Aliens! PONIES!
