Submission + - Google Proposes New Hard Drive Format For Data Centers (thestack.com)

An anonymous reader writes: In a new research paper the VP of Infrastructure at Google argues for hard drive manufacturers and data center provisioners to consider revisions to the current 3.5" form-factor in favour of taller, multi-platter form factors — with the possibility of combining the new format with HDDs of smaller circumference which hold less data but have better seek times. Eric Brewer, also a professor at UC Berkeley, writes 'The current 3.5” HDD geometry was adopted for historic reasons – its size inherited from the PC floppy disk. An alternative form factor should yield a better TCO overall. Changing the form factor is a long term process that requires a broad discussion, but we believe it should be considered'

Submission + - Next Gen ATLAS Robot from Boston Dynamics is Incredible (roboticstrends.com) 1

An anonymous reader writes: Boston Dynamics just posted a video of its next generation ATLAS robot, and it’s absolutely incredible. The video shows ATLAS walk, open a door, maintain its balance while it walks through snow and semi-rough terrain, squat and pick up 10-pound boxes and much more. And it does everything without a tether.

The new version is electrically powered and hydraulically actuated. It uses sensors in its body and legs to balance and LIDAR and stereo sensors in its head to avoid obstacles, assess the terrain and help with navigation. This version of Atlas is about 5’ 9” tall (about a head shorter than the DRC Atlas) and weighs 180 lbs.

Submission + - FFmpeg 3.0 has been released.

An anonymous reader writes: The milestone release FFmpeg 3.0 "Einstein" has been unleashed. For those who need a reminder, FFmpeg comprises several libraries and command-line tools (the main command-line tool being “ffmpeg”) that encode, decode, transcode, and stream audio/visual data, etc. FFmpeg supports a multitude of codecs, filters, and container formats, too numerous to mention here.

FFmpeg is used by MPlayer, VLC, HandBrake, Chrome, and many other projects.

Changes from 2.x to 3.0 include: a much better native AAC encoder, better hardware acceleration, and some API/ABI breakage. See this, this, this, this, and the changelog for much better descriptions of the improvements.

Poor choice of words on my part. I should have worded it: "Which I would understand."

In any case, I find the way you claim to be willing to write off your child's well being and/or life disturbing to say the least. This tells me either that you are a troll, not a parent, or your views are not aligned with USian cultural norms.

I was mostly playing devil's advocate, but since you are so adamant I am going to have to call bullshit on that. While your rhetoric is noble, I would put good money that you would bring suit to anyone and everyone even remotely connected to the situation. As is appropriate.

If what you are saying is true and you actually do have progeny of your own, I am quite surprised at your willingness to accept the demise or disfigurement of your child.

Strangely enough, "DWI Checkpoints" were ruled unconstitutional by the Texas courts in 1994. The busy-bodies in Austin have introduced pro-checkpoint legislation in every session since, but it has yet to become law.

The latest rage in the DWI industry down here is the "No Refusal" gig. You can refuse the field sobriety tests and breathalyzer. Pre-No Refusal you would get thrown in jail and battle it out, you vs. the cop, in court at a later date. This caused embarrassment to the county DAs and hurt the law enforcement ROI as the police generally make many mistakes and a subset of juries are hostile towards government in general.

With No-Refusal in effect, if you refuse the traditional tests you will be asked to give consent to allow your blood to be drawn. If you do not give consent, a judge will issue a warrant for your blood and it will be taken from you.
