Definitely .. this is pretty bad.
I really disliked the 'community' AKA some pissed of mods (who really are only trying to defend a guy making $$ from a 3rd party app, so not sure why all the fuss) response to this, as if Reddit belonged to them. Its systems, hosting etc are owned by a corporation, just like slashdot, facebook and all.

This is very bad, but hopefully Reddit will not succumb to blackmail, and somehow come out of it OK.
Reddit isn't everyone's cup of tea, I'm not a major fan, but like it or not, it is one of the non-facebook sites that has a lot of value, so I'd like it to survive.

Yes. But youâ(TM)re a geek/techie.
Average people should be able to remove a cover/open phone and click in a new battery. My granny should be able to.

Right to repair also means it being easy.

I like apple but they were the first to make this difficult. Phone. Laptop. iPod. Earpods.

They want you to buy new. And you not think other less well off folks would like a phone thatâ(TM)s older if they had a decent battery ?

While Iâ(TM)m ranting they should make a universal form factor for batteries. Oh wait they doâ¦.

Comment Re:Reddit will take away the button (Score 1) 236

All these mods are very self-entitled about their importance. Reddit is not 'their' platform. They are not employed. They do it because they want to, and if you don't want to, take your toys and go somewhere else.
And if you behave like a reckless idiot, reddit will take your modding abilities too, and replace you with someone else who doesn't care for this ban.. there are many willing volunteers ? Don't think so, try and see how invaluable/irreplaceable you are

You all seem to forget Reddit is a business with costs that are not insignificant. It's their platform, not yours.
And as for the 'we create content for them' - in generals that's the millions of internet contributors, who likely won't move away.
Just like the mass exodus of twitter did not happen (some advertisers left, but the general twitterati did not)

Reddit is not your platform, you are not entitled to anything. You use their servers, their resources and if you don't like it, move to another platform. Simple. You think 100s of millions of folks will move with you ? Let's see... most of them don't give a shit as long as they have an outlet for 'their voice'.
The only losers here are those few disgruntled people who have developed their own app and unprepared to pay for access (and doing things like filtering out ads etc - reddits money stream).

In short, accept it or move away... you have no rights, least of all self entitled one.

Comment Re:Mercedes Oil Change (Score 1) 66

Mercedes did not remove the dipstick for the engine.
What is not there is the dipstick for the tranny fluid - which you will not find on most cars anyway.
The tranny fluid replacement in autobox is a specialised job, requiring the -internal- gearbox filter replaced, a flush and bleed procedure , it is not simply topped up, nor is the dipstick min/max. The level is also temperature dependent. If you underfill or overfill the tranny fluid in an auto tranny you WILL cause damage... the tranny fluid also flows in the torque convertor between the gearbox + engine.

I'm not defending this approach of 'keep the owner out'.. it really sucks, and also hurts independent repair shops badly too.
Things need to be repairable- period. And car manufacturers have a lot to answer for, especially in the difficulty level for some repairs due to the design. Eg. to fix most of the engine problems in a range rover, requires the entire car body to be unbolted and lifted off the chassis. To do a timing chain on a lot of vehicles is an engine-out job. And don't get be started on some ford models where the timing belt COVER keeps the crankshaft drive sprocket in position (read no keyway in the shaft), so removing / touching the cover knocks your timing out, destroying engine when you start the car.

Anyway, wanted to correct the wrong info in the link, but the principle of the story is sound and I could not agree more with it.

Man, you are so uninformed it's sickening.

Your 100 PC example is just what I've done. New company, never used Novell in my life before for anything.
Now it's ALL novell running on Linux / OES, ZenWorks for PC management, Groupwise for email, OES for file, print, eDirectory, and kerberos everywhere.

OES rocks the socks of every other Linux enterprise distro.
NDS not around ? Are you smoking the crackpipe ? It's now called eDirectory and is at the core of every service.

As a Linux old hand, I really appreciate the reliablity, simplicity and great services Novell have brought to the table, running on Linux.

They understand 'integration', single sign on, security and that everything should work well together (linux, Apple and Windows). And it does...

File and print ?? iPrint and NCP ported from netware running on OES rocks. I mean rocks.
The stuff you get in OES is astounding.. all the Linux goodies plus loads of novell stuff :
eDirectory, iFolder, Novell Clustering, iPrint, and good integration with M$. Like it or hate it, that IS necessary in corporate IT.

I've bet the ship on Novell, plumping for their Open Workgroup Suite (Great VFM, includes Groupwise, ZenWorks, OES and a load more) and I'm not looking back...

Their support rocks, their products generally rock stable, and a hell of a user community.

Screw Redhat, VmWare, et al, Novell are the ones to watch, they've got it ALL sorted, and their Linux integration is TIGHT.

And finally a plug for SLED10... what a Linux desktop ! Amazing. Everything needed in corporate world for desktop user without the heartache of configuring the shit out of it for weeks to get something close.

SLES 10... makes redhat 5 look like a donkey. In much the same way as SLES9.3 made RHEL4 look like a relic. Configuring sendmail by hand ? Give me a break. Yast rocks the shit out of every other Linux admin tool.

So before spouting about netware is dead, consider what netware was.. a NOS (network operating system) nothing more. A basic OS akin to DOS. That you ran services on top of.

All those wonderful services have now moved to Linux in a coherent, integerated, amazing way.

And this is coming from someone with lots of experience in build IT infrastructure. Tried the Apple OS/X server route... incomplete, unstable and shit. Ease of use yes. Reliabilty shit.

All you OSS mouthpieces who chastise them should be very FUCKING grateful for what they did to SCO.

Long live novell.
