I've been living in Tonga for the last few years. A couple of years back we had a ship "accidentally" anchor drag the fibre in three different places, and were without internet for about 2 months while they did exactly the same repair as they are doing now. They had backup sat gear but being disused for some time some of the staff had taken some of the parts home with them (I shit you not), and they were lost. They claimed they would have another backup system in place to prevent a similar event again, but here we are. The repair is not particularly difficult (contracted to a foreign, purpose built vessel of course) and the outage itself is not at all surprising. I'm not there now, but man it sucked not having internet for 2 months. I have little sympathy though really. This outage is largely of their own making.

From reading earlier reports they are going with LIDAR and have no cameras. This is due to the glasshole effect and it's about bloody time a company took notice too. Always-on AR cameras have no place in social situations. These new glasses may be able to identify some objects using LIDAR but it may not do the job you want so well. It really, really does the job I want though. I so hope this doesn't rely on other apple hardware to run.

Yeah, but what happens when we have swarms of 100+ OTS drones in an attack? I think they'll start to become quite effective. First wave hits some windows to make an entry point for subsequent waves that start detonating inside the building (perhaps with face detection software for a trigger).

We've only achieved eradication once, with smallpox. We have achieved elimination several times. China, NZ and a few others others all successfully *eliminated* covid (yes there were subsequent incursions). Eradication means globally, whereas elimination is a localised term and can refer to any area of interest - in terms of covid it's usually at a country-level.

I guess you could say yachts are a specialty application, but there are a LOT of yachts. Anything under about 40 ft really doesn't have space for enough panels to produce a generous amount of power and people have to skimp on their use. 30% efficient panels would be wonderful and many people would gladly pay a hefty premium.
