Attila Dimedici writes "The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is expected to announce a new regulation requiring all vehicles to contain a 'black box.' Not only that, but the devices would be designed to make it difficult (possibly illegal) to modify what information these devices collect or to disable them even though the courts have ruled that the owner of the vehicle owns the data. The courts have also ruled that authorities may access that data (to what degree and whether a warrant is necessary depends on the state)."

dstates writes "As a mostly happy new iPad owner, I love having lots of apps, but I have got to ask, where is the universal set of gestures for navigation? Pinch and open mostly mean zoom out and in, but sometimes you tap to open, sometimes double tap. Sometimes right swipe is back, sometimes there is a back button, sometimes you just have to go to home and navigate back down. Reminds me of the early days of GUIs when every application had its own menu set with different top-level menus and different placement of various functions. Made life chaos for users. We have been there, done that, and gestures are much worse. At least with a menu, you had a printed tag you could read. Gestures are all magic handshakes until you know them. Seems like the tablet community should not have to learn the value of consistency all over again." What gestures would you like to see made standard in touch-based interfaces?

Facebook and Zynga Team Up To Merge Romance and Social Gaming 38

TechCrunch has the scoop on a really new project from Zynga and Facebook that aims to bring together two of the most popular segments of the social web: romance and gaming. Quoting: "Dubbed 'Relationships,' Facebook is going to soon a section of the site dedicated to helping users meet potential romantic . To do that, the company has been working with Zynga over the last four months to develop games that 'synthesize romance and foster relationships through social gaming mechanics,' helping users flirt and get to know each other using Farmville-like games to help break the . In the post, Facebook says that it will look at the profiles of your previous boyfriends/girlfriends to determine the you’re attracted to most, and that it will also use advanced photographic analysis to figure out your preferred facial structure and body type. In an attempt to privacy concerns before they begin, Facebook notes that all of this is done automatically, and that at no point are allowed to view these reports on your innermost psyche. How reassuring."

Star Wars Fans Look For Love In Alderaan Places 88

Hugh Pickens writes "The Christian Science Monitor reports that devoted fans at the recent Star Wars Convention V, many dressed as Jedi knights, stormtroopers, or the indomitable Princess Leia, sat opposite one another for a series of 3-minute speed dates, in hopes of finding a connection with a fellow Star Wars enthusiast. 'Over the course of the three events, due to size and time, we turned away about 600 participants,' says Ryan Glitch. 'Yesterday, this room was packed. We had to keep shoveling people along.' Meanwhile in the main exhibition hall, a chapel was set up to allow fans to profess their love and devotion to each other in the form of commitment ceremonies. 'I've been told that we've had two commitment ceremonies from people that met at my event,' says Glitch adding that he saw eight additional couples at the convention made up of people who had attended his speed dating sessions."

People aren't knocking RFID as a technology. The application's the problem. I wholeheartedly agree that RFID is a wonderful system for managing inventory. I rather strongly disagree that RFID is a good idea for managing people. After all, the story's not about Wal-Mart trucking their goods past DefCon.

Then there are the good guys, who sit down, don't reformat the drive, work for two hours installing AVG and Ad-Aware, give an hour of instruction during that, and think it's worth maybe $20 and a Coke from their fridge.

All you good guys out there, start charging more. Honestly. You are not charging for work, you are charging for knowledge.

I do. And they pay it happily once I explain that they're not losing any data. Although I haven't used Ad-Aware in a while, it got too bloated for me to want to use. Plus, their installer was all sorts of messed up the last few times I tried to install it.
