An algorithm is only a rule system to process data, based on the decisions of the writer.

For algorithms in the mathematical (and computer science) sense, that's absolutely correct.

The problem is, that this is not what common people (including Obama) mean when they use this word. They are talking about modern AI, including Machine Learning, in which computers extract themselves the rules from data. The decissions do not come from a writer, but are implicit on the data itself.

It's a win-win, no need to look over people's shoulders. In fact, I think I'm going to promote this to Firefox devs.

Not really. They are producing heat and iron metal (from the oxide). Probably they get close to 100% efficiency from burning the iron powder, but only 40% for the later stage of removing the oxygen, which surely also involves heat. If they can re-use this waste heat (for processes that do not require very high temperatures), the overall efficiency can be improved.

Yes, some people work on projects because they have a need. But the world is big and diverse, so there are as many possible motivations as people out there. For those that want to give back and be useful, or those that want to make the biggest impact, a list like this can be quite useful.

Have you tried to ping a computer connected to the same switch (say 50cm away) recently? Do you really *consistently* get less than 1ms latency? Because I don't. Even pinging the router directly gives 1ms average, with peaks a high as 9ms. And that's ethernet, Wi-Fi is an order of magnitude worse.

In fact latency is one of the killer features of Starlink. Currently it is in the 20-40 ms range, but they plan it to go in the 10-20 ms range, which is better than many cable providers. For high paying customers (stock exchanges, military) they can, theoretically, go as low as sub-10ms, but it will probably require specialized terminals.

In Europe, you can get incentives by simply lowering or stopping consumption in moments of peak stress for the network. It is usually limited to big consumers (factories or whole buildings) but as technology progresses it will eventually be implemented for residential homes too. I would be astonished if something similar did not exists in the USA. Obviously, Tesla may play a very significant role here.
