Debunking a Viral Internet Post About Breastfeeding Racism 350

Bennett Haselton writes: A editorial with 24,000 Facebook shares highlights the differences in public reaction to two nearly identical breastfeeding photos, one showing a black woman and one showing a white woman, each breastfeeding an infant. The editorial decries the outrage provoked by the black woman's photo compared to the mild reaction elicited by the white woman's photo, and attributes the difference to racism. I tried an experiment using Amazon's Mechanical Turk to test that theory. Read on to see the kind of results Bennett found.

China's Influence Widens Nobel Peace Prize Boycott 360

c0lo writes "Not only did China decline to attend the upcoming Nobel peace prize ceremony, but urged diplomats in Oslo to stay away from the event warning of 'consequences' if they go. Possibly as a result of this (or on their own decisions), 18 other countries turned down the invitation: Pakistan, Iran, Sudan, Russia, Kazakhstan, Colombia, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Serbia, Iraq, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Venezuela, the Philippines, Egypt, Ukraine, Cuba and Morocco. Reuters seems to think the 'consequences' are of an economic nature, pointing out that half of the countries with economies that gained global influence during recent times are boycotting the ceremony (with Brazil and India still attending)."

Labs Compete to Build New Nuclear Bomb 949

An anonymous reader writes "Yahoo! News is reporting that two labs are currently competing to design the first new nuclear bomb in twenty years. The new bomb was approved as a part of the 2006 defense spending bill. From the article: 'Proponents of the project say the U.S. would lose its so-called "strategic deterrent" unless it replaces its aging arsenal of about 6,000 bombs, which will become potentially unreliable within 15 years. A new, more reliable weapon, they say, would help the nation reduce its stockpile.'"

All very interesting... and you may be correct on most of what you said... however:

- Who supplied him with the WMD he used against the curds and Iranians and others?

- Why did the chief weapons inspector of the early 90's resign saying that there were no WMDs left atall and that the only reason he was there was to humiliate the Iraq governments. (and lets not even mention the US refusing inspectors of their chemical weapons program!)

- The opium production was banned during the Taliban years, and has re-emerged since they have been ousted.

- So half the US money doesn't go on Military... somewhat irrelevant i think, since a third of all the miliary spending in the world is by the US, 10 times its nearest country. Or the fact that with that money world hunger could be all but wiped out (currently killing 10 times the number killed on 9/11 EVERYDAY!!)

And questioning the guys sources when you yourself sight CNN as one of yours beggers belief.
