Comment The Seinfeld approach (Score 1) 251

My brother and I have used the Seinfeld approach for years. Its extremely fun and can lead to a person begging for you to stop. For those who have never seen the episode it goes like this: Scammer calls: Hello Sir, I'd like to talk to you about X Me: Oh man I am SOOO glad you called I am REALLY interested in hearing more about X but right now is not a good time. Can I get your name and home phone number and I'll call you back? Scammer: I'm sorry I can't do that. Me: oh why not? You don't want people calling and bother you at home while your trying to eat or spend time with your family? Scammer: Yes Me: Well now you know how I feel *Click One possible twist is that they actually give you their number (VERY rare). My brother was able to do this with a guy. He proceeded to call him relentlessly at all hours of the day. Leading to the man begging my brother to stop calling. It was a nice piece of justice even if in a small way.

This is an issue in general today. I get a lot of laptops given to me that people think are beyond repair (at least thats what best buy "geek" squad told them) first thing I do is pull the hard drive and check it. 98% of the time it is completely functional and has ALL of their info on it. I always wipe and begin the rebuild of the computer but this all to say people seem to be completely ignorant of the fact that the hard drive needs to be wiped. Just cause it didn't power on doesn't mean your data is lost. I also get computers and parts given to me by people i know at electronic recycling centers and the same is true. When I think of the amount of devices being recycled these days you realize there is a wealth of data just waiting to be accessed by the wrong people in these electronic recycling centers. People NEED to be educated on data storage and the need for it's destruction before getting rid of ANY device where it was used.

Microsoft can go after and capture that market, even at 'premium' prices

The cost difference for these "premium tablets" is such that if a company wanted to buy a serviceable and much cheaper tablet and create a web interface that does what those sales reps need, and that cost of making some of the services people need web based can often be offset in the long run. If you buy 25 tablets at $250 verses 25 tablets at even lets say the $449 you can have a cost savings of 5k to put towards your web interface developments.

but the average person? Doesn't REALLY care

Absolutely they don't, they will ask the person they know who "knows" what is best. Those people the AVERAGE person is asking know that if they recommend something to this person THEY will be answering ALL questions related to this device that AVERAGE person bought on their recommendation. Thus they will try to think of the simplest device that will then create less hassle/questions for them. The question isn't always what is the "best" device but what is the best device for that person.
